Playing the saxophone was just a hobby for Stephen Richard — until he started taking private lessons from the late, great Conrad Johnson. While he was still in high school, he got a chance to sit in during a sound check with the late Grover Washington Jr’s band. He recalls that moment as a turning point in his life. Via press materials, Richard says, ''It was onstage at the sound check…that I had an epiphany that this is what I was supposed to do.'' Fans across the country agree with him. 8 p.m Red Cat Jazz Cafe, 711 Franklin Street. For information, call 713-226-7870 or visit www.redcatjazzcafe.com. $20.
