Swan Lake

Natalie Portman may have gone mad in her preparation for the part of Odette/Odile in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, but Swan Lake is actually one of the most loved ballets in the classic repertory. “I’m thrilled to be given the opportunity to dance the lead in Stanton Welch’s Swan Lake,” says First Soloist Katharine Precourt via press materials. “It is a role that offers such a wide range of expression in both technique and artistry. I look forward to telling this beautiful story of true love to the audience.” Precourt will make her debut in the role, as will newly promoted soloist Nozomi Iijima.

Welch originally staged his variation of the much-loved ballet in 2006, and while there are some slight alterations to the original story, he kept the majority of Tchaikovsky’s timeless music intact. As a fairy-tale story ballet, Swan Lake is a natural showcase for designers. Inspired by the ethereal quality of pre-Raphaelite paintings, the late designer Kristian Fredrikson created a wardrobe for 31 characters, including elegant white swans, whimsical maidens, an opulent royal court and Rothbart-as-dragon.
