Welch originally staged his variation of the much-loved ballet in 2006, and while there are some slight alterations to the original story, he kept the majority of Tchaikovsky’s timeless music intact. As a fairy-tale story ballet, Swan Lake is a natural showcase for designers. Inspired by the ethereal quality of pre-Raphaelite paintings, the late designer Kristian Fredrikson created a wardrobe for 31 characters, including elegant white swans, whimsical maidens, an opulent royal court and Rothbart-as-dragon.
