Tenth Annual UH Moores Jazz Festival
The annual UH Moores Jazz Festival is always a big-tent, all-ages affair. During the two-day event, listeners can hear everything from aspiring local junior-high prodigies to world-class jazz masters. While much of the daytime programming highlights exceptional talent from area schools, the evening programs feature an internationally known guest soloist, along with the Texas Music Festival Jazz Project and the Moores School Jazz Orchestra, both directed by Noe Marmolejo. The guest soloist this year is saxophonist Vincent Herring, who has recorded with The Mingus Big Band, vocalist extraordinaire Nancy Wilson, and a triumvirate of jazz legends: Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey and Horace Silver. Herring, who is on the music faculty of William Patterson University and frequently conducts workshops at Juilliard, has 15 albums to his credit. The Texas Music Festival Jazz Project kicks things off at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Herring performs with the Moores School Jazz Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. today. Moores Opera House, University of Houston, Entrance No. 16. For information, call 713-743-3313 or visit www.uh.edu/music. $5 to $15.
