The 10th Muse

From dance to opera to poetry to performance art, Divergence Vocal Theater combines an array of artistic mediums in its original productions. The company’s powerhouse roster includes local artists such as artistic director and mezzo-soprano Misha Penton, pianist Stephen Jones, choreographer Toni Valle and baritone Michael Walsh. In their latest show, The 10th Muse, the indie opera company will combine scenes and arias from Hector Berlioz’s French opera Les Troyens (The Trojans), based on Virgil’s Aeneid, with Charles Gounod’s 1851 opera Sapho, about the famed Greek poetess (it’s Sappho that the show’s title refers to). Divergence Vocal Theater will add piano works by Viardot and Boulanger, poetry by Austin-based Jill Alexander Essbaum and original contemporary dance. 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday. Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex, 2201 Preston. For information, call 713-416-8944 or visit $20 to $40.

Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sun., March 22, 2 p.m. Starts: March 21. Continues through March 22, 2009
