The Big Show 2010
The Lawndale Art Center has been spearheading the local art movement for a quarter-century now, and The Big Show 2010 is one of its most anticipated exhibits of the season. This year, 396 artists applied for the juried competition, submitting 976 works of art. The works have never been displayed before, and almost every medium is represented, so its something like a great art surprise party, a hodgepodge of mixed-media, paintings, sculptures and more. Guest curator Paul Middendorf, who runs gallery spaces in Portland, has chosen 114 works to display, and three winning artists will take home cash prizes up to $1,250. Mingle with the artists -- and glimpse Houston's artistic future at the opening reception 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 9. Regular viewing hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Through August 7. 4912 Main. For information, call 713-528-5858 or visit www.lawndaleartcenter.org. Free.
Mondays-Saturdays. Starts: July 9. Continues through Aug. 7, 2010
