The Big Slide Show
Now that the Lawndale Art Center has opened its annual exhibit of juried works, it’s time as in previous editions for “The Big Slide Show.” In this informal two-night event, 40 of the total 106 participating artists this year each have five minutes to present images of their work and discuss their creative process. “This is about giving access to artists and creating dialogue,” says Dennis Nance, exhibitions and programming director for Lawndale. “For the artist, it’s a great opportunity to speak about their work and interact with the audience. And for the audience, it’s an opportunity to hear directly from an artist and know that there’s more behind the work than just the object in the space.” And, Nance adds, the talks won’t all be about the same “creative process” one after another. “Sometimes it’s a story; sometimes it’s technical information on a particular process used to make a work. The types of information conveyed in the talks vary greatly.” And at just five minutes of stage time for each artist, things happen at a rapid clip. So if something doesn’t inspire your artistic core, just wait around a bit.
