The Daughter of the Regiment

In Donizetti’s The Daughter of the Regiment, Marie is raised by a regiment of soldiers, with dozens and dozens of daddies. Houston Grand Opera’s production of Daughter features Laura Claycomb as Marie (the beautiful orphan girl), Barry Banks as Tonio (the man she hopes to marry) and Ewa Podles as the Marquise (her long-lost aunt). The Marquise eventually finds Marie and whisks her away, taking her back to a life of wealth and comfort. When the Marquise quickly arranges a suitable marriage for Marie, the regiment decides to step in. They follow their adopted daughter and burst in just as her aunt is about to force her to marry the Duke of Krackenthorp. Then it’s every tenor for himself.

Houston audiences will see a number of HGO debuts with this production, including Podles, Banks, Bruno Practicò (singing as Sulpice) and conductor Riccardo Frizza. 7:30 p.m. today and November 3, 6 and 9, 2 p.m. October 28.
