Director Guillermo del Toro gives viewers a ghostly look at the last days of the Spanish Civil War in The Devils Backbone. Set in a gloomy wreck of an isolated orphanage, the film chronicles the fate of a group of boys and the doctor tasked with keeping them safe. A larcenous assistant, the ghost of a murdered boy, and ever-nearing battles threaten what little security the doctor has managed to create. Watch for the heartbreaking scene in which the doctor, wounded and dying, sets himself up as a solitary watch guard, the last defense between the chaotic world around them and the boys hes determined to protect. 11:55 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
