The Peking Acrobats
In recordings of the Peking Acrobats performances on YouTube, the only audible sounds are the gasps of the audience over and over as the people onstage perform incredible feats of strength and gymnastic ability. Acrobatics have been around as a significant cultural practice in China for 2,000 years, and the Peking Acrobats are at the apex of that tradition. In a performance hosted by the Society for the Performing Arts, theyll be joined by the Womens Peace Orchestra of China, whose all-female ensemble plays 21st-century rhythms on traditional Chinese instruments. Besides jumping, dancing and twirling, the ensemble of gymnasts and acrobats will support themselves on precarious-looking stacks of chairs, leap backwards through hoops, balance each other on freakishly strong arms and generally have the crowd saying Wow. 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Jones Hall, 615 Louisiana. For information, call 713-227-4772 or visit www.spahouston.org. $20 to $45.
Thu., Jan. 27, 7:30 p.m.; Fri., Jan. 28, 7:30 p.m., 2011
