The Refuge

Houston Grand Opera embraces the immigrant communities of Houston with The Refuge. Written by composer Christopher Theofanidis and librettist Leah Lax, both native Houstonians, The Refuge tells the stories of the African, Mexican, Vietnamese, Indian, Pakistani and Soviet-era Jewish immigrants who have come to our city. Lax interviewed hundreds of immigrants, capturing their stories of struggle (walking to Houston from Central America) and success (leaving a war-torn homeland). Members of the immigrant community will perform alongside HGO’s Studio artists and Children’s Chorus. Patrick Summers conducts. The 2 p.m. performance is already sold out, so your only chance to see this groundbreaking work is today at 7:30 p.m. Brown Theater, Wortham Center, 500 Texas Avenue. For information, call 713-228-OPERA or visit www.houstongrandopera.org. Tickets start at $15.
