The Strand Walking Tour
Discover the grand history of Galveston Island's Strand District, which was once known as the Wall Street of the southwest, during today's Strand Walking Tour. The one-hour expedition starts at the Le Clere building, which was built in 1875 by coal baron Isadore Le Clere. After his death, the shop served as a grocery store, art gallery, cigar manufactory and magazine business office; it is currently the home to the tour's sponsor, the Galveston Historical Foundation. The tour concludes at Hendley Row, a group of pre-Civil War-era buildings that once served as headquarters to the Confederate Army troops charged with defending the island during the American Revolution. 9 a.m. Saturdays. Through September 4. 2417 Strand. For information, call 409-765-7834 or visit www.galvestonhistory.org. $5.
Saturdays, 9 a.m. Starts: June 12. Continues through Sept. 4, 2010
