John Carpenter's horror film They Live is an underrated masterpiece. The film stars the one and only Roddy Piper as a drifter named John Nada who accidentally discovers a pair of high-tech sunglasses that allow him to see through the disguises aliens wear. Come to Earth to take over the planet, they've planted subliminal messages everywhere urging humans to consume, to obey, to procreate. Many of the aliens are the financial elite, and Nada's quest to break their hold on the world is a battle cry of class warfare in a heartless consumer-driven world. It's the Reaganomics mentality turned on its head. As far as cultural commentaries go, They Live is like Machiavelli's The Prince delivered with all the brute force of a classic WWF spectacle.
