This Filthy World: Filthier and Dirtier
Here’s some of the best advice we’ve ever heard: “If you go to someone’s house and they don’t have books, don’t fuck them.” That’s a quote from John Waters’s acclaimed one-man show This Filthy World: Filthier and Dirtier, which he’ll be presenting today at DiverseWorks. The legendary director of films like Pink Flamingos, Hairspray and Cecil B. Demented has an enlightened intellectualism and a fondness for being shocking. In Filthy, Waters walks us through his amazing career. We’ll meet the bizarre cast of characters he’s worked with, and hear what it means to break new ground in the world of cinema by challenging all convention.
The performance coincides with a showing of his unique art series “Neurotic” at the McClain Gallery. Waters has taken stills concerning race, sex, gender, consumerism and religion and transposed them into montages and sculpture. “I’m concerned that people don’t remember movies; they remember stills that they’ve seen over and over in books; so I try to photograph things in movies that you are never supposed to see,” says Waters.
Both events offer an opportunity to see a rare artist who is something between a vaudevillian and a scholarly renaissance man.
