Today, Houston electronic group Go Spread Your Wings will return to the stage at the annual KTRU Outdoor Festival, less than two months after member (and former Houston Press employee) Eban Doss was diagnosed with stage-four melanoma skin cancer. "This is something for me to look forward to," says Doss, who has been playing keyboards and various samplers with GSYW partner Dave Salinas since 2003. "It takes my mind off everything else."
When Doss's condition surfaced, friends and family near and far reached out to raise money for the uninsured musician's escalating medical bills. He recently had his first practice with Salinas in more than five months. "It's cool to see him really excited. It's like the old days," says Salinas. "People not only want to see Eban perform, but they really care about him."
The Sea and Cake's leader Sam Prekop headlines the day-long KTRU fest, which also includes Tucson's Treasure Mammal, Houston's Satin Hooks and Rice Battle of the Bands winner Moxie. The family-friendly day kicks off with a special live children's show featuring Maya Bond, the Mathletes, the Old-Timerz and a special performance by Bobbindoctrin Puppet Theatre.
