Tucker & Dale vs. Evil

There’s a whole subgenre of horror movies that involve dark nights, the woods and groups of horny, not-too-bright teens. Of course, there’s usually a gap-toothed, overall-wearing redneck wielding a big-ass butcher knife hunting the kids down. Not so in the horror comedy Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. Here, the good ol’ boys are actually trying to help the doomed snot-nosed kids, even if a series of misunderstandings — and a growing stack of bodies — makes the kids think otherwise.

Director/co-writer Eli Craig’s campy flick, which won the Midnight Audience Award at the 2010 SXSW Film Festival, has been called a mashup between The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Shaun of the Dead. While The New York Times might sniff in disgust, the critic from Fangoria magazine gave it a thumbs up -- or was that a claw? 11:55 p.m. Friday and Saturday. River Oaks Theatre, 2009 West Gray.
