Since 1998, Unhinged Productions has been the leading theater voice for all things LGBT. (If we have to explain the acronym, you're not ready for them.) Like all small, idealistic companies, this one's had its share of ups and downs, but its distinctive voice has neither wavered nor dimmed. Its latest project is a world premiere, Uncivil Unions, and the play promises to be its most ambitious. A close-up look at same-sex marriage, "It's like Moisés Kaufman meets Saturday Night Live," explains Joe Angel Babb, Uncivil playwright and newly appointed artistic director of UP. Kaufman's famous for his documentary approach, in which his collaborative plays are structured from in-depth interviews or historical sources, as in Laramie Project and Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde. The approach gives the works a strong verisimilitude. "All of us have been writing, performing and putting the show together, taking the temperature of what's happening in our community right now." The actors/writers spent months interviewing focus groups and holding community forums to glean material. "This is something that's new for Houston, to experience improvised theater. What I'm hoping will happen is that if you're energized about gay marriage rights, then this will validate something.
