University of Houston Moores School of Music Jazz Orchestra: The Great American Songbook
Radio broadcaster Donna McKenzie and Grammy-nominated singer Tianna Hall join the University of Houston Moores School of Music Jazz Orchestra for The Great American Songbook. The concert features such jazz standards as Cole Porter’s “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg’s “Over the Rainbow” and Jerome Kern’s “All the Things You Are,” among others. “The songs we’re playing are jazz staples,” UH jazz director Noe Marmolejo says via press materials. “These are classic and very important tunes that helped define this truly American art form and shaped the careers of countless musicians.” Recording artist and Jazz Orchestra member Henry Darragh also handles singing duties during the multimedia per-formance. McKenzie accompanies the orchestra, providing a -historical narrative about the songs and the people who wrote them while related images are projected over the stage.
