Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, a tangle of deception and desire, stars Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak. Stewart is Scottie, a San Francisco detective who's been put out of commission by the onset of acrophobia. He takes on what should be a simple case for a friend, following the man's wife on her mysterious and seemingly aimless wanderings through the city. Novak plays the wife, who soon captivates Scottie. But that isn't the smell of romance in the air — it's the stale stench of death.
Vertigo was a perfect fit for Hitchcock, who filled it with angular and scary shots, often seen from Scottie's phobia-impaired view. And Novak, one of the coolest of Hitchcock's cool blonds, plays the mysterious femme fatale wonderfully against Stewart's earnest Scottie, who is helpless against her charms. 6:30 p.m. Alamo Drafthouse, 531 South Mason Road.
