Comedian Wanda Sykes likes traveling for her job. She enjoys the fancy hotels, lavish meals and stretch limos a headliner like her gets while on the road. She especially enjoys all those doormen, waiters and maids who coo, “Yes, Miss Sykes,” “Right through here, Miss Sykes” and “What can I do for you, Miss Sykes?”
Of course, all that changes as soon as she gets home to her wife and two kids. “I’ve been on the road in all these luxury hotels, with cars and drivers. Then I get home and as soon as I walk through the door, my daughter throws up on my shoes. It’s a reality check,” she laughs.
Much of her observational humor comes from her family life, including jokes about her twin pre-schoolers, Olivia and Adam. Not that her kids think she’s funny. (They do, however, think they’re funny. “Oh yeah, when they draw on the walls with markers, they think that’s hilarious,” Sykes tells us.)
She’s sure that when they get older and understand what’s going on, they probably won’t like her telling jokes about them, but she has her defense ready: “Hey, I can tell these jokes or you can go to public school…what do you want? Jokes? Or public school?” 8 p.m. Bayou Music Center, 520 Texas. For information, call 713‑230‑1600 or visit www.livenation.com. $35.50 to $55.50.
