Warhol on TV

While Andy Warhol’s visual art, some of which can be seen regularly at Houston’s Menil Collection, is widely available for viewing, the artist’s extensive film and video output is rarely seen. Aurora Picture Show, in collaboration with the Menil and The Andy Warhol Museum, is presenting Warhol on TV, a 60-minute sampling of television shows from 1971 to 1987 that Warhol either appeared in or produced.

Greg Pierce, assistant curator of film and video at the Warhol Museum, curated the program. “You get to see [Warhol] in all his different guises, more or less,” says Pierce. “Within an hour, you’ll see and hear eight or nine different Warhols. And that’s just a small sampling of what we have.”

The 11-clip program includes episodes from Andy Warhol’s series Andy Warhol’s 15 Minutes, a cable television series from the 1980s that featured celebrities of the time interviewed by the artist. There’s also a posthumous love letter to photographer Man Ray that Warhol reads in tribute, along with Warhol’s hilarious cameo appearance on the 200th episode of The Love Boat. “I excerpted every moment that Andy’s on camera,” says Pierce. “It’s pretty good. [Andy’s] on with an entourage of skinny models and he’s really aloof, just putting his camera in people’s faces.” 7:30 p.m. Menil Park, 1515 Sul Ross.
