Wheel Good Time
There's a special place in the music world for jam bands. Sure, the flavors of the month can fill up stadiums, sell shirts and get ridiculous video play. But a jam band? Heck, people will travel the country to follow them. Much like fellow jam bands Phish, the String Cheese Incident and Widespread Panic, Asleep at the Wheel boasts a ridiculously loyal fan base; theirs have stuck around for almost 30 years. Led by larger-than-life front man Ray Benson (seriously, the dude is six foot seven), the band puts out a dandy, boot-scootin' brand of Western swing that has won the band nine Grammys and the admiration of folks like Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan. They visit town today to push their latest release, The Very Best of Asleep at the Wheel, which, as you may have guessed, promises the premier ditties from the band's repertoire. Sure, the lineup has changed -- three of the members weren't even born when the band first formed. But you can still expect an eclectic show that's a little country, a little roots and lot of rockin'. Sean Reefer and the Resin Valley Boys open.
