If might feel like summer but that holiday season is creeping up on us. Witness the lighted palm trees and the dusted off Christmas wreaths going up at shopping centers around town. And we're seeing the first twinklings of seasonal shows including Stages Repertory Theatre's Winter Wonderettes. This bit of holiday fluff features the girl group from the hugely popular Marvelous Wonderettes. Both shows are musical revues created by Roger Bean and built around featherweight stories.
The narrative tells what happens during the Christmas party for the employees of Harper’s Hardware. Betty Jean, who works at the store, is also part of the girl group the Marvelous Wonderettes. She plans the whole shebang but doesn’t realize there's bad news that’s in the envelopes being passed out to the employees. Knitted cozily into the shenanigans are familiar holiday tunes such as “Jingle Bells,” “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town,” and “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” Never fear, all turns out well in the end and Christmas goes off without a hitch. See Winter Wonderettes at 7:30 Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays, 3 and 8 p.m. Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays. Through December 24. 3201 Allen Parkway. For information, call 713-527-0123 or visit www.stagestheatre.com. $26 and up.
