Wordsmyth 2012-2013 Reading Series: Staged Reading of St. Augustine by David Loewy
David Loewy’s play St. Augustine is getting a staged reading thanks to Wordsmyth Theatre Company. Based in New York, where he works as an actor/playwright/director and arts administrator, the former Houstonian set his comedy/drama locally. “An [elderly] millionaire gathers his family together and announces that he’s achieved enlightenment and relinquishing the things of this world,” Loewy explains. “This is pretty troubling [to his family] because A, he’s a millionaire, and relinquishing the things of this world sounds like a scary thing for a millionaire to do. And B, he seems to have reached this conclusion with the help of his 21-year-old new girlfriend. He’s been a petty tyrant for his whole life, so what does enlightenment mean for him?”
The reading is directed by Brandon Weinbrenner, fresh from his triumph directing Venus in Fur for the Alley Theatre. Loewy hasn’t been involved in the casting or rehearsal process so far. He’ll meet the cast and see just one rehearsal before the reading. “Because it’s a reading, one of the really good things about this production is that it’s just the words,” he says. “Like a lot of playwrights, I tend to write almost musically. My dialogue has a certain intentional cadence and rhythm to it. With a staged reading that musicality can come out. The rhythms between the characters and the tension in the silences get played up, and that’s going to be fun.”
