Children at Risk

Children At Risk is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of life for greater Houston's children through strategic research, public policy analysis, community education, collaboration and analysis. Its primary focus is on childhood health, public schools and poverty and safety issues. Founded in 1990, Children At Risk has produced eight publications that focus on critical issues related to children. The most recent book, Growing Up in Houston: Assessing the Quality of Life of Our Children, is based on a model of 141 quality-of-life indicators. The data presented has been used to validate public policy work, create successful grant proposals and address critical problems facing Houston-area youths.

Contributors to the Children At Risk Research

Dr. Robert Sanborn, president and CEO, received a doctorate from Columbia University and has served on the faculty of several universities, including Emory University, the University of Tulsa and Rice University. The former director of the Education Foundation of Harris County, Sanborn has authored 12 books and dozens of education-related articles.

Mandi Sheridan, public policy analyst, received a master's degree in social work from the University of Houston.

Alexandra Montgomery, researcher, received a master's degree from the University of Houston. Her writings have appeared in The Futurist.

Melissa Fowler, staff writer, received a bachelor of science degree from Texas A&M University.

Julianna Schneider, intern, is working toward a bachelor of arts degree at the University of Virginia.

Elisa Aguirre, intern, is working toward a master's degree in public administration at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University.

Amelia Royce, intern, is working toward a bachelor of arts degree at Georgetown University.

Kristin Malone, intern, is working toward a bachelor of arts degree at Sarah Lawrence College.
