http://www.ei8hthouston.com This urban lounge provides a perfect vibe for its Washington Avenue patrons, with more than enough room for everyone to party. Ei8ht is huge, and on capacity nights you can find people dancing downstairs, upstairs and at one of the several bars present throughout the club. Try one of Ei8ht's sizable outdoor party areas. The rooftop deck for a bit of seclusion, and the expansive front patio for a welcome breath of fresh air. For you to smoke on. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.facebook.com/1820franklin Located only a couple blocks from Minute Maid Park at the corner of Franklin and Hamilton, Eighteen Twenty is a nice spot for a pregame drink minus the roar of most sports bars. Small flat-screen TVs dot the bar, allowing patrons to keep tabs on games while not being the center of attention. This isn't the place for screaming sports nuts, this is more the place for friends to kick back in the black leather chairs and discuss the game in a civil manner. If you're lucky, they'll open the doorway to Joystix Classic Games and Pinball next door and you can practice your Ms. Pac-man skills. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.18thbar.net 18th Cocktail Bar, named of course for the 18th Amendment, is located on Bissonnet right off of Kirby. The former home to almost half a dozen different bars/clubs/lounges in recent memory has now transformed itself into a trip down memory lane -- you even have to have a password to get in (okay, it's not required, but you may just want to play along with the theme). The space is all dark wood and dimly lit, with antique-style chairs and large leather couches -- one wall is covered in art nouveau antique mirrors and another with faux animal heads. One of the best aspects of the building remains -- the outdoor patio (although how great it is in this heat is debatable). Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.einsteinspub.com Einstein's is a favorite refuge for many Katy-area folks, who can be found drinking long into the night seven days a week inside this dark pub or out on its deck. Televisions dot the spacious main room, and pool tables, dartboards, and video games provide some competitive diversions. Houston's smoking ban doesn't stretch this far, but a system of fans and filters keeps the rooms from getting too hazy. Live music fills the weekends, while amateurs are welcome to try their luck at the Wednesday karaoke nights. Drink specials run from inexpensive wells to pint nights, and not just the light-beer standards, either. The wall of taps behind the bar has an impressive selection, so don't be surprised to see some premiums offered up dirt-cheap. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.ejsbar.com EJ's is hidden in plain sight, just off a Westheimer cross street in the heart of Montrose. Despite its somewhat nondescript entrance - a door with a sign next to it bearing the club's name - inside patrons will find a modernized, mildly upscale bar with reasonable prices, a friendly staff and several rooms to explore. One is filled with couches and comfy chairs, another is a pool room, and yet another holds a stage for the amateur male strip nights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The bar itself is set in the middle of the final room, giving customers a 360-degree radius in which to purchase beverages, perhaps to take to the jungle-like two-story patio out back. By the way, EJ's opens at 7 a.m. Seriously. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.facebook.com/elgranmalo You might think El Gran Malo is just a bar, but you'd be wrong. This Timbergrove Tex-Mex spot elevates both tequila and tacos to a fine art, with house infusions like golden beet or pecan-and-cayenne-pepper tequilas that make a mean margarita if you're adventurous. Standards like tamales, tacos and even tortas are all given modern twists, and you can slap a fried egg on top of your torta or get those tacos with Mexican Coca-Cola-marinated pork belly tucked inside. Anchoring a Richmond strip center between Fondren and Gessner, El Rey's blinking neon-green sign beckons drinkers Tuesday through Saturday. This sports bar feels a bit more spacious than most others, likely due to the large dance floor and raised stage. The booze selection is limited to beer and wine, but there are plenty of wells full of ice-cold brews behind the large bar top. Three pool tables sit in the back corner of the big U-shaped room, but the real entertainment is the music - El Rey features a bevy of Latin sounds from salsa and cumbia to one of Houston's myriad rock en espaƱol bands. Monday Night Football and UFC fights are big draws at this Westside establishment with a friendly, attentive staff and plenty of TVs on the walls. Live music on the weekends and karaoke on Tuesdays and Thursdays make the End Zone a popular party spot as well. In addition, the Monday and Wednesday poker nights offer cash prizes, and the kitchen serves up everything from shrimp po-boys to pizza to wings. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.facebook.com/pages/English-Johns-Pub This rough-around-the-edges bar is hard to spot in Old Town Spring, and it's clear the regulars prefer it that way. Located behind an old house, a big sign on the road urges passers-by "Don't Miss It!" but John's customers appreciate the quiet calm afforded by its secluded location. The garage-like bar has a pair of little rooms, one of which is nearly filled up by a pool table. The other holds the bar, a dozen stools and precious little else. A covered outdoor patio makes up for the lack of size, with a few large picnic tables for extra seating. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.etrolounge.com Nestled off the main Westheimer drag, the almost-hidden Etro Lounge couldn't find a better place to blend into the area's surly bar scene. When the swells at Anvil next door just rub your rhubarb the wrong way and the kids across the street at Boondocks aren't doing it for you, one can always duck over here. The sounds here range from New Wave and the odd spooky dance track, not too terribly far removed from what you would hear at on any given night at Numbers a few blocks down the street. The two-level haunt offers plenty of nooks and crannies perfect for conversation and other adult stuff. Drinks come stiff and reasonably priced, and you can always expect the patio to be full of grown-up Goth boys and girls getting their nicotine fix. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
This venerable Third Ward establishment - "open 'til it closes, seven days a week" - has reined it in significantly from its glory-ridden heyday. Once a raucous blues joint frequented by Lightnin' Hopkins, Etta's no longer hosts live music, but the friendly bar and eatery still cooks up a mean piece of catfish or some tasty barbecue, and serves plenty of cold beer to wash it all down. Be mindful that whenever folks are done buying food and drink, and the dominoes in the corner cease slamming onto the tabletop, Etta's shuts down for the night. It won't likely be your late-night spot of choice, but you just might fall in love with Etta's all the same. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
