http://www.jblacks.com This Austin import is much more laid-back than your typical clubs and bars along Washington Avenue and features a full menu — not just bar bites — that allows you to select from dishes such as sliders, salads and starters as well as a huge lineup of pizzas. You can even make your own pizza with a huge selection of toppings to choose from. Brunch features everything from elegant fare to "Texas-sized breakfast tacos." Cocktails lean toward the classic side and the draft beer lineup features plenty of locals. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.jacksonsbarhouston.com With Ruthie's and the Harp down the street, and Grand Prize just around the corner, Jackson's is in prime Montrose drinking company. The front patio is spacious and dotted with picnic tables, and the pours are strong as the bartenders are friendly. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.jailhousesaloontx.com Just a couple blocks from the heart of Old Town Spring sits the Jailhouse Saloon, which at one time really was the town lockup and courtroom. The two cells have been converted into office and storage space, but the iron bars still remain as doors. A small wooden bar top fills most of the tiny main room, with just enough space behind it for a row of coolers stocked deep with an array of beers. An addition to the building provides much more space, plus a second beer well and a stage that hosts music on the weekends. The motorcycle that rests over the coolers hints that "Hawgs" are more than welcome here, as does the sign out front. The Sunday open-jam session turns the Jailhouse into an all-day destination. http://www.jeffs77.com Tucked into a strip center on the south side of 1960, Jeff's might be easy to miss for westbound drivers. This lounge-style bar features a dark interior with a circular booth in the center of the room. Theme nights range from live bands to salsa to karaoke, and a small game room off to the side lets patrons escape the ruckus and shoot some pool. The three-well bar has a few televisions to keep drinkers up to speed on sports, plus Buck Hunter and Golden Tee machines, but this place is clearly geared toward the dance floor. If you take the vibe of West Alabama Ice House in Montrose, condense it down and slice that establishment into quarters, you get Jimmy's Ice House; a little gruffer than West Alabama, but chalk that up to its old-school brewhouse charm. There are infinitely more nooks and crannies to post up in, and more than enough paraphernalia on the walls to keep you occupied. The icehouse is also a favorite of Houston's scooter set, who meet up there at least once a month there to partake of the cheap domestic brews. Jimmy's occasionally hosts open-mike nights where you might find a hidden gem or two. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.jphopshouse.com Beers from both well-known and obscure breweries abound at the sometimes quiet, but always colorful, JP Hops House. The far west Houston bar's walls are lined with retired brews that are either out of season, no longer available in Texas or have been discontinued entirely. Headquarters of the Houston Songwriters Association, the Hops House hosts a Sunday open-mike night regularly visited by musicians from not just Houston, but Austin, Nashville and New York. Monday is vinyl night, with patron-provided LPs - any kind will do - spun on the house speakers for everyone to hear. The bar turns into a hard-times soup and music kitchen Wednesday evenings, as friends bring in homemade soups and share recipes with one another while enjoying tunes from the troubadours. http://www.jrsbarandgrill.com Pounding techno and male go-go dancers collide with a Texas-saloon atmosphere at JR's Bar & Grill. The longtime Montrose establishment is famous for its weekly amateur strip contests, drag shows and karaoke nights -- and offers pool tables, video games, multiple TV screens and a patio out back when the stage is dark. The light of pocketbook will no doubt give thanks for the $1 vodka well drinks on Mondays, along with JR's other daily "recession-buster" specials and occasional catered buffets. http://www.junctionbarandgrill.com Catering to the suit-and-tie happy-hour crowds early in the evening, The Junction gets louder and more hopping the later the hour grows. Open bay doors on all sides allow natural breezes to flow through the main room, which is surrounded by patios facing West Gray and a drinking platform up top. The food menu carries a litany of delights, including tacos made from the bar's seasoned burger beef (a personal favorite), plus some of the hottest crawfish this side of the Louisiana border when in season that is. Some televisions are literally on the bar top - complete with remotes - so you'll never be stuck mindlessly watching ESPN while you drink. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
