Mention Kay's Lounge to seasoned Houston drinkers, and the first thing out of their mouths is probably a line about the bar's trademark Texas-shaped table smack-dab in the middle of the front room. The virtually ageless bar is covered in decades of Houston history, from the vintage beer ads and signs lining the walls to the dusty, yellowed snapshots of the establishment's past clientele. Considering its West U location, Kay's has a glancing reputation as a preppy dive, but don't let that dissuade you from basking in the glow of one of Houston's most revered neon-lit haunts. An Internet jukebox rests in the corner instead of the old-school manual one Kay's once had, so prepare to be at the mercy of strangers' questionable listening habits if you don't shove in a few dollars before they do. Budget-minded drinkers can snag a few free hot dogs on Mondays. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.kelvinarms.com Kelvin Arms is dominated by a huge bank vault in the middle of the bar - a holdover from when the Rice Village building was University Bank in the late 1920s and early '30s. Today the old vault resembles an elegantly appointed and softly lit library, albeit one where you can chug shots inside. Outside the huge steel door, Kelvin Arms has an HD projector constantly showing sports, and a shrine to Sean Connery. This one is worth getting off the beaten Rice Village path to venture into. http://www.irishpubkenneallys.com It's just off the Westheimer drinking drag, so Kenneally's Irish Pub doesn't get as much hipster love as bars like Catbird's or Poison Girl, but it's a Houston institution and deserves a whirl from any learned local barfly. Located across the street from the Red Lion Pub and a PetCo, the simple and sturdy-looking pub has a cozy, wood-paneled interior. Walk down two steps to belly up to the U-shaped bar as a handful of televisions run at all times; the corner jukebox is loaded with Irish drinking compilations, The Eagles, classic soul and - surprisingly enough - The Smiths. If you get hungry, Kenneally's is known for its homemade pizzas, especially customer fave the Shamrock Special. Parking gets a little hairy at night, but it's worth the tight squeeze around back. http://www.khonsbar.com Khon's isn't exactly in a neighborhood - in fact, it's the heart of a Midtown strip center several streets away from any houses - but it has a neighborhood feel. It's a haven for creatives looking for a bit of refreshment, be that beer and wine or coffee and tea, open seven days a week, every day of the year. The cooler is stocked with loads of icy brews from around the Gulf Coast, including some hard-to-find Louisiana beers, and the extensive sake menu has a selection of tasting flights. Owner Khon Lu supports the local arts community by featuring both visual art on the walls and live music in the bar. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
This brand-new pub in the Energy Corridor may not look like much from the outside, tucked into a stucco strip center under a dentist's office, but it has a great pedigree: The King's Head Pub was recently opened by British ex-pat Michael Holliday, who also opened The Richmond Arms and The Stag's Head. And not only is everyone welcome here, dogs are too -- on the big patio. The King's Head shows nearly every footie match and even offers the occasional "Scottish night" with all the traditional Highlands tunes you can bear. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
Despite the reptilian name, snakeskin or any other animal-print decor is nowhere to be found at Komodo's Pub. Instead, the converted residence in the heart of Midtown is more like visiting your grandmother's house — albeit with a large bar in the middle of the living room and a backyard patio. Good for large groups or date nights, Komodo's draws a lively crowd in tune with the casual atmosphere and eclectic jukebox. For those coming straight from work, the bar's lengthy list of shots allows plenty of options for blowing off steam after a day droning at the office. Remember to create tangible and incriminating artifacts from your evening in the bar's photobooth. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.kungfusaloon.com Kung Fu Saloon is another in an increasingly busy line of bars catering to drinkers who grew up playing Mortal Kombat and NBA Jam after school and want to meld adult drinking life with childhood. The concept proved popular in Austin naturally, making a niche for itself in that city's busy bar scene, so the owners branched out back east. There are large crowds on the weekends and on "Little Friday", but the bar's decadent bar food menu makes up for your trouble. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
