The Ginger Man Pub

The Ginger Man Pub

Boasting what the bar claims is "America's largest selection of import draughts," the Ginger Man surely has a brew to suit you amongst the 68 on draft and additional 140-150 bottled suds.
Under The Volcano

Under The Volcano

Don't miss the "steak night" special on Monday nights, when a 16-ounce USDA Choice ribeye with tossed salad and mashed potatoes is a bargain.
Dan Electro's Guitar Bar

Dan Electro's Guitar Bar

A smattering of old guitars and groovy fluorescent skating-rink stars decorate the walls, and Dan Electro's corner stage has played host to too many local and regional names to count (most often blues, folk, roots-rock and hard rock).

  • Pistachos Lounge & Bar

    5887 Westheimer Houston, TX 77051
    832-316-0644

Quite possibly the newest member of our Latin list, Pistachio's is a wee baby in terms of age, but this salsa haunt has made a major impression in just a short time. With Sibido Thursdays, Social Fridays and the inimitable Latin Saturdays, this lounge isn't pretentious but it is full of chatty, dancing patrons who are ready to take advantage of the tequila specials and merengue tunes. • PJ

    PJ's Sports Bar

    614 W. Gray Houston, TX 77019
    713-520-1748

http://www.pjssportsbar.com There's nothing fancy here -- the bar is small, and the decor consists mainly of promotional posters from beer companies. But the food is good and so's the company, especially on Thursdays. That's steak night, and the menu couldn't be more straightforward: two steaks, two salads, two baked potatoes and a pitcher of beer for $27, or $13.50 if you are rolling solo. Owner P.J. Mastro himself barbecues the man-sized steaks. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • Poison Girl

    Poison Girl

    1641 Westheimer Houston, TX 77006
    713-527-9929

http://www.myspace.com/poisongirlbar A sign behind the bar commands patrons to "Drink Like An Adult," just above a list of their selection of American-bred whiskeys. In a neighborhood full of younger bars catering to trendier crowds, Poison Girl stands out for its maturity. It's the bar for when you grow out of dance nights and just want to drink something strong to unwind from working for the Man. Before the smoking ban passed, this place was a Marlboro-sponsored sauna. But PG expanded its back patio to accommodate the smokers and give the less-heartier lungs a break. On weekends, it is hard to find a place to sit, inside or on the patio. So come early to stake out a spot at one of the chalkboard tables, complete with a stick of chalk to do your filthy doodles. The row of pinball machines on the back wall is sure to pique your interest by beer three. We highly recommend the Family Guy game. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • The Poop Deck

    The Poop Deck

2928 Seawall Blvd Galveston, TX 77550
    409-763-9151

This place is sweet -- it's biker and cyclist friendly -- so anything on two wheels is welcome. Not that they'll turn you away if you pull up in your Prius, mind you, but still. Feel free to ride your chopper over to The Poop Deck, Galveston's long standing biker bar on the seawall. It's got a dirty pirate feel to it, this place. Imagine all the hijinks those naughty pirates got themselves into over a pint of rum, and now throw in some bikers, and that's what we picture The Poop Deck being. Awesome, right? Yeah, we'll meet you there Saturday. We'll be the nerds on the two wheels with no engine. That's how we roll. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • Porch Swing Pub

    Porch Swing Pub

69 Heights Blvd. Houston, TX 77007
    713-880-8700

http://www.porchswingpub.com Whether dressed in a suit or sporting flip-flops, you will find Porch Swing Pub an all-around laid-back neighborhood bar. The spacious patio full of picnic tables is good for large groups, as ample seating, multiple TV screens and a pool table wait inside. The full bar carries 38 beers on draft and another 30 or so in bottles, with German and Irish brews alongside the usual American standbys. It's easy to forget this one in lieu of the flashier bars off Washington and in Midtown, but this is a top notch spot. Plus, Hickory Hollow and their chicken fried steak is just in walking distance. • Pour House

    281-443-7696

  • The Pour House Pub (Stafford)

    The Pour House Pub (Stafford)

    10315 W. Airport Blvd. Stafford, TX 77477
    281-561-7687

http://www.thepourhousepub.com Down near Murphy Road on West Airport, minutes away from U.S. 59, Stafford's Pour House caters to sporting types. The multitude of pool tables are put to good use on APA league nights, where team shirts bearing names like "8 Ballers" or "Q-Masters" are a common sight. While the number of taps is small considering the bar's name, the liquor selection is rather large, as is the selection of video games sometimes set on free play. The corner stage boasts live music, and a suspiciously placed "support pole" atop the long bar suggests things may get rowdy from time to time. The gigantic projection wall is big enough to turn already sizable athletes into 15-foot-tall, awe-inspiring wonders. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

    Proof Bar + Patio

2600 Travis St. Houston, TX 77006
    832-767-0513

http://www.facebook.com/proofhouston It seems like every few years another owner tries their luck with the spot above Reef on Travis. Varieties of clubs have inhabited the rooftop space, and Proof is now the newest. Truth be told, it's a pretty spot and the nearby skyline is legit, but getting a steady crowd in every weekend is the hard part. Here is hoping the newest Midtown influx will help Proof's chances. Pub Fiction

    2303 Smith Houston, TX 77006
    713-400-8400

http://www.pubfiction.com Pub Fiction is the quintessential Midtown bar, catering to the well-scrubbed folks who come out to play after dark, while also helping out the drinking class with killer happy-hour prices and daily specials. Homebodies and fanatics will appreciate the abundant, strategically placed TVs tuned to sporting events all year long, with plenty of seating throughout (including a few plush couches for the birthday girls). The bar's red corner stage hosts live music, mostly DJs and pop cover bands, on the weekends, and the huge front patio facing Smith Street is perfect for people-watching and hollering at the crowds crawling to and fro all night. • Public House

    Public House

2802 White Oak Drive Houston, TX 77007
    713-880-2337

http://www.publichouseheights.com Public House off White Oak in the Heights is one of the first "grown" bars in the area, surrounded by ice houses and sports-themed joints. This makes the PH a rarity and a must-visit for the tamer set in the neighborhood. Located a few doors down from D'Amico's Italian Market Café, it's also a great after-dinner haunt, if their wine and carbs didn't already do you in. A menu of signature cocktails features the Taylor Lee, made of bourbon, ginger beer, and lime juice, which hits the proverbial spot. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
