http://www.roederspub.com For those who think wood is good, Roeder's Pub salutes you. The floors? Bare wood. The bar? Wood. The tables and chairs? Wood and wood. Even the shutters are wood. In the desert of sizzling concrete that is the corner of Shepherd and Alabama, Roeder's offers a sylvan refuge, a dark and cool spot to chill with a single malt or pint of black beer. There's also a small parking lot patio, real darts, Golden Tee and a Britpop/alt-country juke for those who like their liquid retreats loud and/or active. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.ronspub.com Ron's Pub is almost otherworldly. Tucked into a strip center near San Felipe, it's easy to miss, but the homey atmosphere makes it worth tracking down. Inside, the bustling bar has a remarkably old-world feel, with an array of dartboards and football scarves - that's "proper football" or, as we Yanks say, soccer - lining the walls. Perhaps it's the dark, heavy wooden bar, or the smattering of taps that deliver a list of quality brews, but everyone seems to know each other, and Ron's is brimming with clusters of friends even on a Monday night. Located off Washington Avenue, Roosevelt is made almost exclusively of brick and glass inside, which makes it look like some swinging space-age '60s bachelor pad - or at least a modern day designer's idea of one. Easily one of the most lush-looking bars in town, Roosevelt definitely skews to an older crowd that wants the upscale party experience, and does pay attention to the dress code. In other words, come correct or don't bother. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
It's tucked away in that confusing little welter of diagonal streets near where North Main and Airline Drive snake under Loop 610, and it's tiny, so the Rose Garden is literally hard to find. Also concealed is the culture it represents: that of the Polish Texans who came to this city from rural Texas in the years just before and after World War II. That's why the bar is red and white, just like the Polish flag. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.royaloakhouston.com Royal Oak Bar & Grill is located just yards away from Boondocks and shares the same ownership, but is considerably quieter without being a snooze. The décor displays an attention to detail rarely seen in Montrose, as the wood flooring, leather seating, upstairs lounge, televisions, indie-rock soundtrack, Prohibition-era portraits on the walls and chandeliers made from deer antlers all create a unique neighborhood experience. Food here includes humongous personal pizzas, shrimp and grits, and a heap of truffle fries that eats like a meal. Be sure to check out the front patio, which faces Westheimer for optimum people-watching; sitting outside here is cheaper than a movie ticket and just as entertaining. The Wednesday happy hour is whiskey-centric and well worth a stop. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.rudyardspub.com Where else in Houston could you see Valient Thorr, eat a near-orgasmic cheeseburger (seriously, it's kinda sexy), watch the Rockets on the tube and play a game of drunkenly dangerous darts all in the same night? Rudyard's, that's where! Located just off Waugh in the Montrose and amidst town homes and sketchy backstreets, its charm isn't manufactured or pre-packaged like all the other corporate "pubs" in town. Rudz is a product of its environment through and through, populated by our city's own indie musicians and artists. The beer menu is lively and always changing, so be sure to stop by frequently to taste some of the state's best micro-brews. Also, the bathroom wall graffiti is the best in town. The above-average bar food is popular. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
This easy to miss, but not to be missed, dive is located right on Richmond Avenue snuggled behind a small parking lot. The icehouse's central attraction is probably either the "Bad Ass" jukebox or solitary pool table, but the giant TV in the corner usually tuned to ESPN is no shrinking violet. A grill on the back patio is available for cookouts; bring your own meat, though. Ruthie's is cash-only, but does have its own ATM for your convenience. This place gets a bad rep as being some sort of hipster-ridden dive, but we all know that good times don't care how expensive your bicycle was. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
