The Ginger Man Pub

The Ginger Man Pub

Boasting what the bar claims is "America's largest selection of import draughts," the Ginger Man surely has a brew to suit you amongst the 68 on draft and additional 140-150 bottled suds.
Under The Volcano

Under The Volcano

Don't miss the "steak night" special on Monday nights, when a 16-ounce USDA Choice ribeye with tossed salad and mashed potatoes is a bargain.
Dan Electro's Guitar Bar

Dan Electro's Guitar Bar

A smattering of old guitars and groovy fluorescent skating-rink stars decorate the walls, and Dan Electro's corner stage has played host to too many local and regional names to count (most often blues, folk, roots-rock and hard rock).

  • South Beach

    South Beach

    810 Pacific Houston, TX 77006
    713-529-7623

http://www.southbeachthenightclub.com Its location in the heart of the Pacific Street district is appropriate, as South Beach has become the premier dance club for the gay crowd. It's also the most modern, if not for the stone built into the walls you might think you were dancing in a spaceship. The main room boasts a massive circular dance floor surrounded by two bars and several dancing levels. The much smaller entryway room has its own bar and a quieter feel for those who want to avoid the party inside. South Beach offers great music and strong drinks and is very proud of both. There are always special events, like record release parties and more naughty affairs going on weekly, so be sure to check their Facebook site for the latest news. • SPJST Lodge-Chandelier Ballroom

    SPJST Lodge-Chandelier Ballroom

    1435 Beall Houston, TX 77008
    713-869-5767

At OTC, loud, danceable music blares over the speakers inside, and young successfuls refill their poison before making their way outside for a game of corn hole and an opportunity to actually hear each other speak. Lively and rambunctious, this crowd comes to party. Parking is limited, so bring cash for the valets on the weekend. But this is all only pregaming for Roak, which may be the most popular club to open in this area in the last half-decade. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • The Spot Club

    The Spot Club

    1732 W. 18th St. Houston, TX 77008
    713-864-4485

Just west of T.C. Jester beyond the Heights, The Spot Club is a true gem. A dependable crowd of regulars is present every night of the week, gathered around the big, old-style wooden bar with an island of booze in the center. Serving up drinks with a "darlin" and a smile, the attentive staff oozes old-school country charm. A small stage in the corner hosts live music throughout the week, but The Spot's best-kept secret might be its kitchen, so make sure to grab some food while visiting. • Spotlight Karaoke (Midtown)

    Spotlight Karaoke (Midtown)

2700 Milam St. Houston, TX 77006
    N/A

http://www.spotlightmidtown.com Spotlight Karaoke's Midtown location is a hot bed of embarrassment most nights, as guys and girls take to the bar's tiny stage to warble their best versions of hits by Madonna and Journey. This is a streamlined karaoke bar, with an emphasis on a fun party atmosphere. The main room is built just right to gander at the stage, and a full-length bar keeps the evening lubricated. You can rent a private room for your karaoke party if you can't bear to sing in front of strangers. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

http://www.stadiagrill.com This all-purpose sports bar sits in the Villagio cluster of shops on far Westheimer, just inside Grand Parkway. • The Stag

    The Stag's Head

    2128 Portsmouth Houston, TX 77098
    713-533-1199

http://www.stagsheadpub.com There are a lot of places claiming to be "pubs" around Houston, but few actually pull off an authentic vibe without throwing in the frat towel. Count the Stag's Head, right across Portsmouth from Cactus Music, as one of the places in town doing pub life right. The bar has a cozy, compartmentalized attitude where you can disappear into a dark corner almost any hour of the day to drink and watch a game or two. In fact, during the most recent World Cup season, Stag's Head was a teeming mass of suds and shouting during matches. Their food is exceptional, with the Jamaican Jerk wings a real standout. All the local beers are on tap, even the limited-edition brews fresh from the Saint Arnold's brewery. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • The State Bar & Lounge

    The State Bar & Lounge

    909 Texas Houston, TX 77002
    713-229-8888

http://www.thestatebar.com State Bar doesn't seem to belong in the 21st century at all. The official-looking seals outside may lead you to believe you're walking past some government agency, and upstairs you could be forgiven for expecting to run into Sam Rayburn or even Sam Houston at any moment. The sizable wooden bartop and vintage chairs, tables and leather sofas give the impression of a swanky old hotel lounge - like The Shining's Overlook minus the dance floor. State's spacious but sectioned-off interior offers a host of secluded spots for quiet conversation, and the view from the second-story patio is one of the best downtown panoramas going. 2533 Southmore Houston, TX 77004
    281-974-4744

Biz Markie has hosted a thing or two at this Southmore hip-hop hotspot, so that should tell you a little somethin'-somethin'. With some fantastic DJs who know just the right music to throw on, and some pretty sweet happy-hour specials, and somehow never feels pretentious, Sugarhill is just about the perfect spot to shake your tail feather. • Sunny

    Sunny's Bar

    902 Capitol Houston, TX 77002
    713-224-3200

http://www.sunnysbar.com Sunny's is a slice of Kemah-style island boozing amongst the skyscrapers and big business of Downtown Houston. Owned by a couple whose sole aim was to open a friendly bar free of its surroundings' posh attitudes, this bar is definitely worth looking for street parking in its ticket-happy area. Sunny's is extremely bright on the inside, with a pronounced beach vibe and cute signs and stickers throughout. This is the kind of bar where the drinkers become family over a few visits and look out for one another. The night we came in, there was a casserole in the crock pot near the pool tables. A big draw here are the potent Jell-O shots and alcohol-soaked pineapple wedges, which aren't for lightweights. It's rare to spend just a few minutes at Sunny's, and not unusual to see a crowd staggering out at closing time on a weeknight. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • Swagger

    Swagger

3839 SW Freeway Houston, TX 77027
    713-256-1776

http://www.facebook.com/pages/SWAGGER/101854029851344 It's difficult to turn a designated retail space into a hopping nightclub, but Swagger does. Located in a Southwest Freeway strip center near Greenway Plaza, Swagger's storefront was probably intended for something like a cell-phone store or sandwich shop. Even on weeknights this lounge is bouncing with activity. DJs post up in the back of the room to spin old-school rap, soul, funk, and club hits, and the long bar stretches the length of the room. Margaritas are always $3 and a few tables are available, but it's probably easier to just start dancing. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

    26440 FM 1093 Richmond, TX 77494
    832-222-9005

The Cajun food isn't great, but if you're looking for a place to eat cheap boiled crawfish, drink beer, smoke cigarettes and sing along to a cover band at the top of your lungs, you can hardly do better than Swampy's. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
