http://www.tapshouseofbeer.com Taps House of Beers carries all manner of alcoholic spirits and will even make you a whiskey sour, but beer is the main thing here. The line of taps is gigantic, but not quite to the degree of, say, the Flying Saucer on Main. They have plenty of brands and special batches to sate the amber-hued thirst of anyone in your party, including the dude that won't drink anything you can pronounce. What Taps may lack in exotic brews, it more than makes up for in non-boozy distractions, with plasma television sets and various games of skill galore dotting the premises. Make sure to order one of their 100-ounce carafes of suds at least once. It's fun for parties, and gives you a sense of accomplishment if you finish it. That, and a wicked headache. The weekends get pretty hectic here, so bring your credit card and some patience. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.tastingroomwines.com This is not your typical bar food: French fries are coated with divinely pungent white truffle oil, and artisanal charcuterie and cheese plates aim to complement your choice of wine. Sunday brunches with a distinctly Southern twist are hugely popular events, as are the occasional crawfish boils thrown on the patio in the summer. And while you normally wouldn't consider a weekday lunch at a wine bar, the menu of gourmet sandwiches and dishes, like goat cheese ravioli in a brown butter sauce, is so alluring that you'll even forget they serve wine at the Kingwood outpost of the Tasting Room. http://www.taylorsofhouston.com Taylor's of Houston's is on the city's southwest side, past South Main on South Post Oak. This spacious dance hall's sizeable dance floor is often full of people shaking away the night. Three bars throughout the building dole out the goods all night; the back patio has a fourth, along with some pool tables. If the event hall isn't large enough, there's an additional VIP lounge complete with another dance floor and a "support pole." The entire place can be reserved for private parties, a not-uncommon occurrence. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.tcshowbar.com TC's Show Bar is intended for transvestites and their admirers, but all are welcome. Since summer 1999, the nearly hidden bar off Fairview has staged free drag shows at 11 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, plus 8 p.m. Wednesday "matinees." It's a bit dark inside, but the friendly waitstaff, abundant seating and well-lit pool/pinball area keep patrons comfortable. If drag's not your bag, TC's is also stocked with seven flatscreen TVs, a bartop gaming system and an overly diverse jukebox. Sunday is hot dog night. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
Along with places like Etta's Lounge and The Silver Slipper, The Big Easy keeps Houston's blues and zydeco scene vibrant and fertile, bringing down-to-earth charm and solid soul to one of the city's toniest areas. The focus here is on local artists, living legends who routinely draw capacity crowds. The ghosts of blues past are haunt the club's walls in spirit and in portraits. The club's high volume level and physical intimacy - weekend nights here can redefine the word "packed" - offer patrons the chance to get up close and personal with the artists and each other alike. Plenty of stories are floating around about oldsters cutting the proverbial rug and dancing rings around the younger folks. The front patio offers an almost alarmingly close view of Kirby Drive, one of Houston's main surface-street arteries. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.friedokra.org/charity-bar.html After almost a year in the making, OKRA Charity Saloon made it's debut in earnest late last year. 100% of the bar’s proceeds go to a local and deserving charity, turning your sinful evenings with the fire water into something great for others. Charity Saloon is open until 2 a.m. seven days a week for all of your drinking and yes, there is a kitchen blasting out bar food. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
Nearing its third decade in business, TK Bitterman's on West Alabama has more than a little history in its walls. The bar has been a neighborhood staple for almost 25 years, and before that a Chinese restaurant, dry cleaner and a few other bars - including Rudyard's, before that bar moved to its present location on Waugh. Bitterman's folklore states that the building also housed a brothel upstairs, but that's mostly on the down-low. Today it's a homey, Chicago-centric watering hole with all kinds of Cubs and Ernie Banks paraphernalia on the walls - the owner is from the Windy City - but Astros fans are tolerated too. Besides the nightly cast of friendly drinkers and bartenders to enliven your evening, some nights you can grab a few slices of Kenneally's famous pizza here. http://www.tonyscornerpocketbar.com Tony's Corner Pocket on Dallas, just yards away from downtown proper, is sassy and dark, just the way we like our bars. This gay haunt serves up cold beers and drinks inside and on a cozy backyard patio. All the boys -- some dancing -- are shirtless, and the attitude is lively. http://www.clubtropicanahouston.com Nestled in the elbow of one of Houston’s countless strip centers, Club Tropicana may not appear to be much from the exterior. The sign's blue and red glow can be easy to miss from the street, but for those seeking a dance club with Latin flair, Tropicana is a bright destination. Once inside, patrons will find a large dance floor, abundant seating, and an impressive bar in a room rich with red and mahogany decorations. Dancers twirl about three nights a week, sweeping in for the Tuesday salsa lessons and rolling to the DJs who spin hot rumba, bachata, and merengue tracks. Tropicana is only open Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, though, so plan accordingly. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
