The Ginger Man Pub

The Ginger Man Pub

Boasting what the bar claims is "America's largest selection of import draughts," the Ginger Man surely has a brew to suit you amongst the 68 on draft and additional 140-150 bottled suds.
Under The Volcano

Under The Volcano

Don't miss the "steak night" special on Monday nights, when a 16-ounce USDA Choice ribeye with tossed salad and mashed potatoes is a bargain.
Dan Electro's Guitar Bar

Dan Electro's Guitar Bar

A smattering of old guitars and groovy fluorescent skating-rink stars decorate the walls, and Dan Electro's corner stage has played host to too many local and regional names to count (most often blues, folk, roots-rock and hard rock).

  • Valentino Houston & Vin Bar (Hotel Derek)

Valentino Houston & Vin Bar (Hotel Derek)

    2525 W. Loop S. Houston, TX 77027
713-850-9200 Hotel Derek's Valentino Houston & Vin Bar makes the idea of "spending the night" at a bar entirely possible. Valentino, the intimate back-room restaurant, is elegantly appointed and ideal for a romantic dinner, while the lobby-side Vin Bar has hipper décor and a livelier, more casual atmosphere. The hotel's complimentary valet will make you look like a big shot to your date, but both food and drinks are relatively affordable - especially Vin Bar's many tapas offerings under $10. Thursday nights feature J.J. Usher's soothing acoustic performances, while jazz group Oxygen gets patrons up and dancing on Saturdays. Read more about Valentino Houston & Vin Bar (Hotel Derek) >>

  • Valhalla

6100 Main St. Houston, TX 77005
713-348-3258 The periodic table painted on the wall should tip you off that this is a haven for grad students, of both the perpetual and temporary varieties. Eggheads hunker down here in this dungeonlike basement pub beneath the old chemistry building at Rice, and what keeps them coming back is perhaps the cheapest beer in town. (Volunteer bar staff help keep prices low.) Then there's the conversation: You can scour the country far and wide, but you would be hard-pressed to find a bar with a brainier clientele. And don't let the warlike name fool you since geeks are more likely to find paradise here than any deceased Viking warrior. The booze sticks to wine and beer only here, meaning you have venture into the real world for the hard stuff. Read more about Valhalla >>

  • Velvet Melvin Pub

    Velvet Melvin Pub

    3303 Richmond Houston, TX 77098

If ever there were a spacious, comfortable Upper Kirby sports bar with a plethora of televisions, Velvet Melvin is it. With an iconic circular sign and expansive patio fronting Richmond Avenue, this watering hole is hard to miss. The brave and brash might want to try tackling the Melvin's "Drink the Tank" challenge: A 64-ounce fishbowl full of various liquors. (Don't say you weren't warned, though.) Weekly drink specials, Monday-night trivia, an all-day Sunday happy hour and a cluster of Golden Tee machines keep patrons coming back. Or perhaps it's the bar's array of beers and hefty food menu - including the Melvin Melt, "guaranteed to cure a hangover." Read more about Velvet Melvin Pub >>

  • Vida Lounge

    5959 Richmond Houston, TX 77057
832-969-1268 If you were over age 21 in the '90s, or lucky enough to snag a decent faux ID, chances are you remember when the Richmond strip was the place to be. Now if you're a hip-hop fan, Richmond is back in the game thanks to Vida Lounge. Its list of events boasts an impressive list of big names who hang out at the lounge. Antwon Blake, Patrick Beverly, and Big K.R.I.T. have all hosted events there in the past few months -- K.R.I.T. alone should hint at Vida's legitimacy, no? Read more about Vida Lounge >>

  • Vin Bar

    Vin Bar

    2525 W. Loop S. Houston, TX 77027
713-850-9200 In its cheery, modern tones of red, white and black, the Vin Bar at this Galleria-area hotel is more than welcoming. There's a big, horseshoe-shaped bar that more or less encourages discussion among your fellow barmates and a kind, keen bartender or two to keep you in beer or wine while you're there. I would, however, advise sticking only to beer or wine, even if the beer selection is your standard Silver Eagle starter kit stuff, as the cocktails here lean to the saccharine side. • Vintage Pub

    Vintage Pub

13245 Jones Road Houston, TX 77070
281-970-1399 This little pub is known for its Karaoke Thursdays, probably due in part to the fact that they have some decent rock songs to choose from. Cheap drinks, too. And on the upside? No Britney here -- unless you're hell-bent on it, anyway. Read more about Vintage Pub >>

  • Vintropolis

    10001 Westheimer Houston, TX 77042
713-532-9463 In a villa-themed shopping center off Westheimer near the Beltway, Vintropolis sets itself apart from the recent wash of wine bars opening around town. Rather than choose the dark, crowded and cozy wine-cellar route, Vintropolis features a Mediterranean appearance and spacious feel. Drinkers fond of an al fresco experience will immediately note the abundance of outdoor tables, shaded by large trees - an ideal spot for a late-afternoon glass. There are walls full of bottles and a helpful staff to aid in their selection, but don't miss the dozen or so wines on the $5-glass list. Read more about Vintropolis >>

3822 Cavalcade St. Houston, TX 77026-3404

  • Voodoo Queen

    Voodoo Queen

322 Milby St. Houston, TX 77003
713-555-5666 Brought to you by the team behind Moon Tower Inn, this sister bar with a Tiki/New Orleans theme has the look and feel of a dive bar, but the quality and creativity of its food and drinks far exceeds what you might find in most dives. In addition to tasting good, the food items have some amusing names like “3 Big Ass Chicken Strips” and “The Dead Elvis,” which consists of lots of peanut butter, six bacon strips, and two bananas, all griddled on Texas Toast and smothered in rum-raisin maple syrup. Some of the drink names are equally comical, like the Penus Coladus, Wench's Titty Punch and the Whale's Vagina aka the San Diego; obviously this place does not take itself too seriously. The bar is filled with fun, kitschy items like a portrait of a woman whose face is covered with black-metal corpse paint, a stuffed bear and a Love Meter machine. A fish tank behind the bar is filled with a number of fish and a pair of crawfish that survived a Moon Tower boil, according to our bartender. The CD jukebox is free to play and is loaded with music that the owners like; fortunately, they have good taste. Tom Waits, Pantera, outlaw country, gangsta rap and Elvis himself are among the selections. Read more about Voodoo Queen >>
