http://www.royaloakhouston.com Royal Oak Bar & Grill is located just yards away from Boondocks and shares the same ownership, but is considerably quieter without being a snooze. The décor displays an attention to detail rarely seen in Montrose, as the wood flooring, leather seating, upstairs lounge, televisions, indie-rock soundtrack, Prohibition-era portraits on the walls and chandeliers made from deer antlers all create a unique neighborhood experience. Food here includes humongous personal pizzas, shrimp and grits, and a heap of truffle fries that eats like a meal. Be sure to check out the front patio, which faces Westheimer for optimum people-watching; sitting outside here is cheaper than a movie ticket and just as entertaining. The Wednesday happy hour is whiskey-centric and well worth a stop. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.rudyardspub.com Where else in Houston could you see Valient Thorr, eat a near-orgasmic cheeseburger (seriously, it's kinda sexy), watch the Rockets on the tube and play a game of drunkenly dangerous darts all in the same night? Rudyard's, that's where! Located just off Waugh in the Montrose and amidst town homes and sketchy backstreets, its charm isn't manufactured or pre-packaged like all the other corporate "pubs" in town. Rudz is a product of its environment through and through, populated by our city's own indie musicians and artists. The beer menu is lively and always changing, so be sure to stop by frequently to taste some of the state's best micro-brews. Also, the bathroom wall graffiti is the best in town. The above-average bar food is popular. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
This easy to miss, but not to be missed, dive is located right on Richmond Avenue snuggled behind a small parking lot. The icehouse's central attraction is probably either the "Bad Ass" jukebox or solitary pool table, but the giant TV in the corner usually tuned to ESPN is no shrinking violet. A grill on the back patio is available for cookouts; bring your own meat, though. Ruthie's is cash-only, but does have its own ATM for your convenience. This place gets a bad rep as being some sort of hipster-ridden dive, but we all know that good times don't care how expensive your bicycle was. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.saintdanes.com Formerly the home of Late Nite Pie, Saint Dane's still opens and closes by means of the original garage doors. Since one of SD's owners has a Saint Bernard and the other has a Great Dane, their idea was to make SD a dog-friendly neighborhood pub with a full menu of low-priced food. The scenery is pretty spectacular too; looking north there's a great view of the downtown skyline. Tuesday night's are hopping evening here, with $1 tacos and of course, pups galore. http://www.samhoustonhotelbar.com Everything about the Sam Bar just feels like an authentic hotel bar of old, minus the fancy new crystals that are hanging from the ceiling and the recently reupholstered lounge chairs (something about the slightly grizzled bar had to match the swanky, colorful Alden Hotel in which it's housed). It even serves great old classic cocktails like the Pegu Club, as well as a very good selection of beer (local craft brews and otherwise). Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.sawyerparkhouston.com Two stories of plasma televisions, cold beer, and a strict dress code are the calling cards of Sawyer Park. There's a rear game room complete with skee ball, but really Sawyer Park's biggest attraction is that second-story party deck with a generous view of the Houston skyline. Be sure to come dressed correct to Sawyer Park though; their door staff is known to turn away those of you who take "casual" too far. Washington Avenue may be in it's twilight season, but Sawyer doesn't play around. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.scootersicehouse.com Scooter's Ice House is arguably the best-known ice house in Pearland, and undoubtedly the suburb's most storied bar. There's no liquor license, but you're more than welcome to bring your own hard stuff, and the staff will gladly sell you setups. Smoking is permitted when those garage doors are open, another old-school draw to go with the Tex-Mex/country/classic rock-heavy jukebox and prime people-watching. http://www.myspace.com/scottgertnerssportsbar Three-time Grammy nominee Scott Gertner does everything in a big way, and his Sports Bar Live is certainly no exception. Bedecked in red and orange lights, its massive patio is almost impossible to miss from the street; inside or out, there's more than enough space to have a seat, kill some cold ones and chow down while taking in a game. Screens of all sizes, including two massive ones outside, litter the premises, and the booming sound system keeps everyone up to date on the score. Likely the swankiest bar of its kind in Houston - there's even a doorman on Monday nights - Sports Bar Live has a stylish flair that most sports bars don't even bother to attempt. http://www.facebook.com/ShadyTavernIceHouse Mostly visited by neighborhood locals, Shady Tavern feels like a second home tucked away among the gigantic trees of the Heights. The plywood structure has a large dog-friendly yard where your four-legged friends can romp while their owners kick back with Texas beers or whiskey from the well-stocked bar. Peanuts, tortilla chips and bottled water are all complimentary, but the classic-rock-heavy jukebox isn't. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.shakespearepub.net Literally tucked away behind another shop on Memorial, this dimly lit saloon is a west-side haven for music lovers. Live music graces Shakespeare's intimate stage every night except Monday, climaxing in the bar's Sunday-night blues jam. A pair of pool tables, giant Texas flag over the stage and a smattering of photos and signs on the walls create a proper ambience for sudsing away an evening. That should be easy, because the horseshoe-shaped bar doles out a 20-ounce "beer of the month" for a meager three bones. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.sharkbartx.com Shark Bar is a slice of the beach - er, at least Clear Lake - smack-dab in the middle of downtown Houston. Located inside Bayou Place, Shark Bar is decorated in a sterile beach theme, with vintage surf boards, a fake palm tree, and wooden décor everywhere, bringing to mind those old woodie-style station wagons all the old-school surfers rode around in. Hell, Point Break was even playing on two plasmas the night we stopped by. A DJ consistently pumps out party music, and a large deck outside has couches you might very well melt into. And to answer the nagging question: Yes, the men and women who sling drinks at Shark Bar do wear beach attire, including bikinis on the gals and board shorts for the boys. Any time of the year is an endless summer here, and unless you party harder than most, you shouldn't have to worry about getting seaweed in your pants. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.mcelroyspub.com/shaymcelroys.html A bit of Dublin in the Central Business District, Shay McElroy's is ripe for a business lunch or post-work drink - offering perhaps, as the pub crows, the "best pint of Guinness downtown." The fenced-off patio offers insulation from Main Street's stream of pedestrians, while two dozen barstools await those who'd rather sit at or near the bar. A few (silent) televisions keep sports fans up to date on the game, the in-house stereo doesn't overpower the conversation, and Shay's array of Scotch and Irish whiskeys will politely see that workday out the door. Shepherd Park Draught House specializes in above-average pub grub and local craft beers, a pleasant combination to run across in the fairly quiet Garden Oaks/Oak Forest area just north of the Heights. Happy hour specials let you enjoy beer and wine on the cheap, while late-night hours ensure that locals don't have to venture inside the Loop to find something good to eat on a weekend evening. Burgers are your best bet here, as is the Sunday morning brunch that's perfect for fighting rock star-size hangovers. The walls are covered in rock paraphernalia, including a section plastered in classic punk and hardcore flyers, some from Houston's own sweaty shows. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
With its full bar, friendly staff and large patio, think of Shiloh as the Cheers of the Heights. Many regulars - a cast of likely characters full of everything from war stories to neighborhood gossip - have been coming to Shiloh for years, and welcome newcomers with open arms. One TV may be showing the big game, while another might be surrounded by people commenting on the latest Dancing With the Stars episode. During football season, Shiloh has steak night and free pool to go with Monday Night Football, and a locally famous (or perhaps notorious) "Make Your Own Bloody Mary" day on Sundays.
