http://www.shotbarhouston.com Eerily reminiscent of those classic college-town mainstays and a popular transition spot for Midtown nightcrawlers, Shot Bar is right at home in the neighborhood's collection of bars and lounges. Liquors pour forth in all sorts of colors and flavors, as the packed crowd places repeat orders for small doses of booze. Every Thursday through Saturday, a DJ blasts away hot pop and rap tracks as the full house gets down and dirty. Many a ladies-night party has been spotted slamming back water moccasins or letting fate dictate their selections via the giant shot wheel. You can't miss the wall of shot glasses as you come down the stairs, either - bring your own and the bar will fill it for free before adding it to the collection. Fifth Ward's legendary Silver Slipper is older than the majority of Houston's drinking population at this point. Specializing in blues and soul, the low-slung bar opened its doors in 1952 and has remained a family business ever since, passing from father to son. The Slipper's red lights are lit every night except Sunday and Tuesday, but we recommend Saturday. That's when the bar turns into the church of Barry White, presided over by patron saints Sam Cooke and Solomon Burke. The dance floor repeatedly fills and empties, with the crowd often aiding, abetting and egging on the band. Cover charge is only $5, table service is provided, and although the Slipper only sells a small variety of beers, patrons are welcome to bring their own bottles and purchase mixers. http://www.simoneonsunset.com For a post-dinner drink, Simone makes a quiet alternative to the bustling Village Arcade around the corner. The brand-new Rice Village lounge occupies half an old bungalow on Sunset Boulevard; most customers seem to be locals, walking from their nearby homes to sip some wine, investigate one of the specialty cocktails, or try unorthodox menu items such as the Duckling and Kubla Khan pizzas. What was once a driveway is now Simone's patio, and the interior décor could be dubbed "modern distressed" - stained concrete floors, shattered-glass double doors, and bare Edison bulb clusters as chandeliers. http://www.soleacafe.com Sporting both Persian and Cajun dishes on its broadly global menu, Solea offers a little something for everybody. This extends to its nightly live music selection — which often features one of its owners, Amin Safari, playing his own flamenco music — and its broad wine, beer and spirits list, heavy on Texas products. Standards such as truffle fries and meatloaf are as reliably good as more eccentric dishes, like the Natchitoches meat pies or the goat cheese-stuffed dates with pistachios (both of which make great bar snacks). http://www.sonomahouston.com This is an elegant Heights-area spot to sip a glass or two from an extensive list of excellent, fairly priced wines or beers. There's also a cheese and meat plate with nuts, fruit, lots of Italian meats and three different cheeses, thin-crust pizzas, including a delicious smoked duck breast version and panini. The brie plate is served warm and drizzled with honey over crisp slices of apples and pears. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.southbeachthenightclub.com Its location in the heart of the Pacific Street district is appropriate, as South Beach has become the premier dance club for the gay crowd. It's also the most modern, if not for the stone built into the walls you might think you were dancing in a spaceship. The main room boasts a massive circular dance floor surrounded by two bars and several dancing levels. The much smaller entryway room has its own bar and a quieter feel for those who want to avoid the party inside. South Beach offers great music and strong drinks and is very proud of both. There are always special events, like record release parties and more naughty affairs going on weekly, so be sure to check their Facebook site for the latest news. Just west of T.C. Jester beyond the Heights, The Spot Club is a true gem. A dependable crowd of regulars is present every night of the week, gathered around the big, old-style wooden bar with an island of booze in the center. Serving up drinks with a "darlin" and a smile, the attentive staff oozes old-school country charm. A small stage in the corner hosts live music throughout the week, but The Spot's best-kept secret might be its kitchen, so make sure to grab some food while visiting. http://www.spotlightkaraoke.com Hidden in the corner of a strip center at Fountain View and Westheimer, Spotlight Karaoke wants to make everyone a star. According to the bar's Web site, they'll record your performance or stream it on the Internet. Spotlight requires customers planning to sing to purchase at least two drinks, a perfect rule for a karaoke bar, and has plenty of tables for you to peruse the bulging binder of almost 12,000 available songs. Private rooms are available for birthdays and other large gatherings. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.spotlightmidtown.com Spotlight Karaoke's Midtown location is a hot bed of embarrassment most nights, as guys and girls take to the bar's tiny stage to warble their best versions of hits by Madonna and Journey. This is a streamlined karaoke bar, with an emphasis on a fun party atmosphere. The main room is built just right to gander at the stage, and a full-length bar keeps the evening lubricated. You can rent a private room for your karaoke party if you can't bear to sing in front of strangers. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.stadiagrill.com This all-purpose sports bar sits in the Villagio cluster of shops on far Westheimer, just inside Grand Parkway. Friendly girls in referee-striped T-shirts dispense drinks and pub grub to patrons who cheer, celebrate and yell at one of the two dozen televisions, including the huge projection screen on the right wall. Various nights feature specials on wings, steaks and sliders, and bottomless mimosas for those Sunday sporting-event marathons. Stadia has a sister bar in The Woodlands, and another opening in Pearland soon. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.stagsheadpub.com There are a lot of places claiming to be "pubs" around Houston, but few actually pull off an authentic vibe without throwing in the frat towel. Count the Stag's Head, right across Portsmouth from Cactus Music, as one of the places in town doing pub life right. The bar has a cozy, compartmentalized attitude where you can disappear into a dark corner almost any hour of the day to drink and watch a game or two. In fact, during the most recent World Cup season, Stag's Head was a teeming mass of suds and shouting during matches. Their food is exceptional, with the Jamaican Jerk wings a real standout. All the local beers are on tap, even the limited-edition brews fresh from the Saint Arnold's brewery. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.thestatebar.com State Bar doesn't seem to belong in the 21st century at all. The official-looking seals outside may lead you to believe you're walking past some government agency, and upstairs you could be forgiven for expecting to run into Sam Rayburn or even Sam Houston at any moment. The sizable wooden bartop and vintage chairs, tables and leather sofas give the impression of a swanky old hotel lounge - like The Shining's Overlook minus the dance floor. State's spacious but sectioned-off interior offers a host of secluded spots for quiet conversation, and the view from the second-story patio is one of the best downtown panoramas going. http://www.sunnysbar.com Sunny's is a slice of Kemah-style island boozing amongst the skyscrapers and big business of Downtown Houston. Owned by a couple whose sole aim was to open a friendly bar free of its surroundings' posh attitudes, this bar is definitely worth looking for street parking in its ticket-happy area. Sunny's is extremely bright on the inside, with a pronounced beach vibe and cute signs and stickers throughout. This is the kind of bar where the drinkers become family over a few visits and look out for one another. The night we came in, there was a casserole in the crock pot near the pool tables. A big draw here are the potent Jell-O shots and alcohol-soaked pineapple wedges, which aren't for lightweights. It's rare to spend just a few minutes at Sunny's, and not unusual to see a crowd staggering out at closing time on a weeknight. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.facebook.com/pages/SWAGGER/101854029851344 It's difficult to turn a designated retail space into a hopping nightclub, but Swagger does. Located in a Southwest Freeway strip center near Greenway Plaza, Swagger's storefront was probably intended for something like a cell-phone store or sandwich shop. Even on weeknights this lounge is bouncing with activity. DJs post up in the back of the room to spin old-school rap, soul, funk, and club hits, and the long bar stretches the length of the room. Margaritas are always $3 and a few tables are available, but it's probably easier to just start dancing. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
