The Ginger Man Pub

The Ginger Man Pub

Boasting what the bar claims is "America's largest selection of import draughts," the Ginger Man surely has a brew to suit you amongst the 68 on draft and additional 140-150 bottled suds.
Under The Volcano

Under The Volcano

Don't miss the "steak night" special on Monday nights, when a 16-ounce USDA Choice ribeye with tossed salad and mashed potatoes is a bargain.
Dan Electro's Guitar Bar

Dan Electro's Guitar Bar

A smattering of old guitars and groovy fluorescent skating-rink stars decorate the walls, and Dan Electro's corner stage has played host to too many local and regional names to count (most often blues, folk, roots-rock and hard rock).

  • The Washington Avenue Drinkery

    The Washington Avenue Drinkery

    4115 Washington Houston, TX 77007
713-426-3617 More than a dozen phrases painted on Washington Avenue Drinkery's walls, offering encouragement that a fourth shot isn't such a bad idea on a work night, are prime examples of the bar's smirking attitude toward Washington Avenue's social mores. It's a spacious place, but room at the bar is limited, so your best bet on crowded nights is the smoky back patio and outdoor bartender. Be sure to partake in Chef Bob's culinary delights. His steak night offerings are sinful. Read more about The Washington Avenue Drinkery >>

  • West Alabama Ice House

    West Alabama Ice House

    1919 W. Alabama Houston, TX 77098

Less a bar than a perpetual backyard barbecue, the breezy, this open-air ice house has been quenching the thirst of beer-starved Montrosians since 1927. It's a blue-collar place to knock back a social beer after work and discuss the great affairs of the day and the tawdry gossip of the neighborhood. Fridays in summer the icehouse offers free grilled hot dogs, and live bands of all shapes and sounds take to the small outdoor stage. In winter, they unfurl plastic walls and trot out the space heaters, and patrons repair indoors for pool and jukebox tunes. This is a suburban icehouse done right, inside the Loop. • The West End

    The West End

5320 Westheimer Road Houston, TX 77056
713-590-0616 This Galleria-area “Public House,” as it calls itself, draws its clientele largely from young professionals and business people. This place is big, with a huge patio that can seat more than 400 people, ideal for the many parties the venue often hosts -- birthday, company, Christmas, etc. The extensive menu of bar food includes burgers, wings and fish and chips, as well as the Wednesday steak night that seems mandatory for Houston bars at this point. There is a bit of a Clockwork Orange theme going on here, with images inspired by the film on employees' T-shirts, menus and signs, but the bar itself looks nothing like the Korova Milk Bar, maybe a little Duke of New York Pub, for all you Kubrick fanatics. Join their pub club to become a “droog” and earn points towards free appetizers, West End merchandise and even a trip to a brewery of your choice in Europe, including airfare and hotel. • Westwind Club

    Westwind Club

5905 Guhn Rd Houston, TX 77040
713-462-7204 Housed in a traditional Texas country dancehall-style building in Northwest Houston, Westwind is now the oldest running honky-tonk in Houston after Blanco's in River Oaks closed in 2013. Speaking of Blanco's, Westwind is now hosting a lot of artists who played there, including the Cornell Hurd Band, Jesse Dayton, and the Derailers, who are scheduled to play an upcoming Blanco's reunion show with more planned for the future. As their website states, the patrons of Westwind come out to do some “two-steppin' and long-neckin',” and for most customers the long-neckin' consists of drinking Bud Lights, other domestic beers, and the occasional import; there are no fancy craft beers served here, thank you very much. The club is big enough to accommodate the two-steppers out on the dance floor on Saturday nights, but small enough to feel like an intimate neighborhood bar during the afternoon happy hour. Country Legends 97.1 FM broadcasts live here every Saturday night and DJ Ron plays nothing but classic country hits released before 1980 on Sundays starting at 1 p.m. A game room with shuffleboard, pool tables, video games, darts and a Texas Pride Meter is available, and the outdoor patio for smokers is air-conditioned for hot Texas summer days and nights. Wild Geese Tavern

9721 Broadway St. Pearland, TX 77584-8169
713-436-5245 Located in the Silverlake district of Pearland, that little ol' suburb to Houston's south, sits Wild Geese Tavern. Home to pool sharks, buck hunters, and whiskey drinkers. Wild Geese is one of the busiest bars in Pearland, and attracts every stripe of local. It was one of the first bars to serve hard liquor in town, meaning that this place has christened many a 21-year-old into the drinking class. Don't make that scare you off, this place is for everyone in town. The night we visited, there was a great big group of poker players in the front room having at it.
