The Ginger Man Pub

The Ginger Man Pub

Boasting what the bar claims is "America's largest selection of import draughts," the Ginger Man surely has a brew to suit you amongst the 68 on draft and additional 140-150 bottled suds.
Under The Volcano

Under The Volcano

Don't miss the "steak night" special on Monday nights, when a 16-ounce USDA Choice ribeye with tossed salad and mashed potatoes is a bargain.
Dan Electro's Guitar Bar

Dan Electro's Guitar Bar

A smattering of old guitars and groovy fluorescent skating-rink stars decorate the walls, and Dan Electro's corner stage has played host to too many local and regional names to count (most often blues, folk, roots-rock and hard rock).

  • Cedar Creek

    Cedar Creek

    1034 W. 20th Houston, TX 77008
    713-808-9623

http://cedarcreek.squarespace.com Cedar Creek Cafe is a beer-and-burger joint that calls itself a Hill Country Cafe and wishes it was in Austin. The yearning for the vibe of Texas' hipster capital is overwhelming. Take advantage of the free wi-fi -- when it is free that is -- and soak in the frat element here. The excellent house java is supplied by Katz Coffee Company, and the breakfasts are excellent, even though the restaurant doesn't open until 11 a.m. on most days. • Cedar Lounge

    Cedar Lounge

    7237 Airline Houston, TX 77076
    713-694-7683

The inconspicuous, windowless, orange-roofed Cedar Lounge has been an Airline Drive mainstay for nearly 50 years. Former home to legendary white blues musician Joey Long, who passed in 1995, the stage rests deep within the lounge's dark interior. In front is a dance floor, which occupies a healthy piece of the medium-sized bar's real estate, and the trio of pool tables in the back are frequented by regulars taking drags on cigarettes and often running the table. The beers are cold and cheap, the service is old-fashioned, and anyone spending any length of time here is bound to come away with a story or two. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • Cellar 17

    Cellar 17

    6608 FM 1960 W. Houston, TX 77069
    281-893-6400

http://www.cellar-17.com If you detect a whiff of cigar smoke inside this cozy Tomball wine bar, there's an easy explanation: Not only is a humidor adjacent, but the owners allow customers to puff away inside. Cellar 17 is really almost more shop than bar, but patrons are free to linger and sip, or perhaps enjoy one of the periodic tastings. Big, comfy living-room furniture offers somewhere to sit, and racks upon racks of bottles around the room house the bar's inventory of more than 300 labels. Monthly and quarterly clubs offer selected wines and discounted bottles to members. Cellar 17 has a small food menu, and allows customers to bring in outside victuals. • Cellar Bar

    Cellar Bar

    3140 Richmond Houston, TX 77098
    713-528-6435

http://www.facebook.com/thecellarbar If you find yourself visiting the dimly-lit and dirty-looking Cellar Bar before midnight, you'll most likely find it empty inside. The outside patio however, is the hot spot for patrons, mostly all smokers. The bar offers pool tables, a Wii, dart boards, and karaoke on Fridays. The bartenders are always laid-back, and good music is usually playing from the jukebox. Did we mention that the pitchers of Lone Star are only $6? That's good enough reason to check the place out. Between midnight and 2 a.m., the place will get pretty packed, but those pitchers will keep even the most exhausted customers coming around. Cellar Bar may feel a bit dirty, but it's got character. • Cellar Bar (Clear Lake)

    Cellar Bar (Clear Lake)

16611 Sea Lark Houston, TX 77062
    281-218-6197

Located on a side street just off El Camino and Bay Area Boulevard, Cellar Bar oozes a relaxed charm that makes it a popular escape from the usually much busier Molly's Pub just across the parking lot. Inside the little lounge, a red glow lights up a calm area lined with barstools, a handful of tables and two pool tables in the back. A few televisions play sports and sitcoms, giving the spot a living-room ambience. The Cellar offers a decent collection of beers and booze, including bartender favorites Fernet and Campari. • Celtic Gardens

    Celtic Gardens

2300 Louisiana St. Houston, TX 77006
    713-900-2500

http://www.facebook.com/celticgardens Celtic Garden come armed with a huge – we mean it – patio full of tables, televisions, and comfy seating, the bar seems more like a place to plop down until closing time rather than a evening jump-off point. During good weather, the inside bar also becomes the outside bar, with shutters than can come to serve those in the A/C and those braving the elements. Celtic Garden is incredibly clean, no frills, except for those sleepalicious couches of course, and worthy of a visit for those looking to hold court with a big crowd. Stick with the Garden for the long haul and you will be rewarded. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • Cezanne Jazz Club

    Cezanne Jazz Club

    4100 Montrose Houston, TX 77006
    713-522-9621

http://www.blacklabradorpub.com Touted as one of Houston's best jazz clubs, this snug but comfortable space resides above the Black Labrador pub near the intersection of Richmond and Montrose. Cézanne is only open Friday and Saturday from 8:30 p.m. until midnight, but the music usually packs the place to capacity as patrons line the walls, bar and dozen tables; the grand piano makes a natural centerpiece for the room. The cover charge is automatically added to your bar tab, and guests are required to purchase at least one drink. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • CHA Champagne & Wine Bar

    CHA Champagne & Wine Bar

    810 Waugh Houston, TX 77019
    713-807-0967

http://www.chahouston.com Known as Houston's only champagne bar, Cha offers an extensive variety of bubbly, along with a fine selection of beer and wine from across the globe. Special plates to complement the libations include smoked salmon, foie gras, local cheeses, smoked duck breast and specialty pizzas, and the friendly staff is happy to help guide you through the extensive lists. Although Cha is small, it is elegant and comfortable, with an artsy interior filled with oversized chairs and couches. The second-story patio makes for a perfect place to take in the downtown Houston skyline (from River Oaks) while sipping your selection. • Chapel Spirits

    Chapel Spirits

534 Texas St. Houston, TX 77002
    713-222-8177

http://www.chapelspirits.com Of all the bars at Bayou Place, Chapel Spirits is easily the swankiest, with red leather, red lighting, a semi-strict dress code and a separate party room dimmed just right for private events. The vibe it's aiming for is decidedly Rat Pack, even if the music wants you to throw down with Lil' Wayne and Ke$ha. We especially like the couches lining the windows, perfect for sprawling back and taking in the action around you, even if you are just having a few drinks with friends. Oddly, the black-and-white televisions never show old-school flicks, but if you ever wanted to see Joe Dirt in glorious B&W, you're in luck. Chapel Spirits' one downside is that there is no adjoining patio, which is probably just fine for those of us who don't hate our health and lung capacity. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • Char Bar

    Char Bar

    305 Travis Houston, TX 77002
    713-222-8177

With its marriage of two disparate services, Char Bar is quite possibly downtown's most peculiar drinkery. What used to be, and in fact still is, a tailor shop opened by Duke Shapiro has been beautifully remade into a Market Square watering hole. A shoeshine booth sits to the left as you enter, followed by a behemoth working counter. The cabinets in the walls are still full of fabric and dress shirts, which, along with the various photos and newspaper clippings plastered around the place, help with the nostalgic feel. Be sure to partake in the bar's frozen vodka or tequila concoctions, which are stronger than they look. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • Chayn

    Chayn's Nightclub

    3920 FM 1960 W. Houston, TX 77068
    281-444-4411

http://www.chaynsclub.com Shrouded by trees in the lower corner of a three-story office building, Chayn's is an inconspicuous spot, and its customers like it like that. The sizeable lounge is a haven for weary business folk during the week and an energetic nightclub come the weekend. Dozens of tables fill the rooms, with plenty of booths, stools, and chairs at the ready, and a beautiful old bar dominates the front. Beyond the dance floor in the middle of the lounge, a second bar waits to assist with larger crowds. On calm nights, Chayn's relaxing, dark atmosphere is a natural companion to the soothing clink of ice cubes in glasses. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • Cheers 2 U

    Cheers 2 U

    14023 Westheimer Houston, TX 77077
    281-870-1735

Eight years ago, Cheers 2 U had only one television, the walls were painted turquoise, and beer was sold by the can. Jim Keener, who had moved to Houston two years previous, bought and remodeled it from the ground up - and emblazoned a six-foot Pittsburgh Steelers logo on the front window in honor of his hometown. Today the Mission Bend-area bar is going strong, laid-back during the week and a lively pub on the weekends, especially the Saturday karaoke nights. About once a month, a local band serenades customers celebrating the weekend's arrival, and the drink specials are ever-changing but always priced to move. Since it's illegal to sell a pitcher to an individual, Cheers offers 2.5-pint "Smitchers" to offset that little inconvenience. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

    281-326-5282

http://www.chelseawinebartexas.com Chelsea Wine Bar's artifacts, statues, mirrors and even the bar itself -restored and varnished wood from a Galveston dock - make it feel timeless. Steak and wine specials make it a hit with locals and adventurous Houstonians as well. Whether you're looking to read a book in peace, enjoy live music or sit around catching up with a friend or two, Chelsea has got you covered. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • Christian

Christian's Tailgate Grill & Bar (Heights)

2820 White Oak Houston, TX 77007
    713-863-1207

http://www.christianstailgate.com Over the past few years, Houston has watched as the lower Heights area has expanded with new developments, first telegraphed by Onion Creek and Fitzgerald's renaissance on the corner of Studewood and White Oak. The Christian's Tailgate folks were watching, and have opened their third location just a few doors down from Fitz and Jimmy's Ice House to get in on the action. This new Tailgate is built for Texas weather, with an outdoor bar ventilated by a few open garage doors, and a back bar for those less inclined to sweat while they drink. As with the Midtown Tailgate, the burgers are the stars, and the Playboy-lauded victuals are in full effect here. Parking problems have been alleviated by an open lot across the street from the bar, so this location is a perfect spot to pre-game before taking in a concert down the way. At the rear of the room rests the bar, nestled darkly along the back wall with about a dozen stools. A multitude of plump leather couches offer ample seating at the floor level, providing a comfortable cushion for taking in a performance. The lounge also features an ornate chandelier, along with a huge marbled staircase that leads up to a small terrace level and a second, fully stocked bar. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
