The Ginger Man Pub

The Ginger Man Pub

Boasting what the bar claims is "America's largest selection of import draughts," the Ginger Man surely has a brew to suit you amongst the 68 on draft and additional 140-150 bottled suds.
Under The Volcano

Under The Volcano

Don't miss the "steak night" special on Monday nights, when a 16-ounce USDA Choice ribeye with tossed salad and mashed potatoes is a bargain.
Dan Electro's Guitar Bar

Dan Electro's Guitar Bar

A smattering of old guitars and groovy fluorescent skating-rink stars decorate the walls, and Dan Electro's corner stage has played host to too many local and regional names to count (most often blues, folk, roots-rock and hard rock).

  • The Sam Bar

    The Sam Bar

    1117 Prairie Houston, TX 77002
    832-200-8888

http://www.samhoustonhotelbar.com Everything about the Sam Bar just feels like an authentic hotel bar of old, minus the fancy new crystals that are hanging from the ceiling and the recently reupholstered lounge chairs (something about the slightly grizzled bar had to match the swanky, colorful Alden Hotel in which it's housed). It even serves great old classic cocktails like the Pegu Club, as well as a very good selection of beer (local craft brews and otherwise). Read more about The Sam Bar >>

  • Shay McElroy

    Shay McElroy's Irish Pub

    909 Texas Houston, TX 77002
    713-223-2444

http://www.mcelroyspub.com/shaymcelroys.html A bit of Dublin in the Central Business District, Shay McElroy's is ripe for a business lunch or post-work drink - offering perhaps, as the pub crows, the "best pint of Guinness downtown." The fenced-off patio offers insulation from Main Street's stream of pedestrians, while two dozen barstools await those who'd rather sit at or near the bar. A few (silent) televisions keep sports fans up to date on the game, the in-house stereo doesn't overpower the conversation, and Shay's array of Scotch and Irish whiskeys will politely see that workday out the door. The State Bar & Lounge

    909 Texas Houston, TX 77002
    713-229-8888

http://www.thestatebar.com State Bar doesn't seem to belong in the 21st century at all. The official-looking seals outside may lead you to believe you're walking past some government agency, and upstairs you could be forgiven for expecting to run into Sam Rayburn or even Sam Houston at any moment. The sizable wooden bartop and vintage chairs, tables and leather sofas give the impression of a swanky old hotel lounge - like The Shining's Overlook minus the dance floor. State's spacious but sectioned-off interior offers a host of secluded spots for quiet conversation, and the view from the second-story patio is one of the best downtown panoramas going. • Sunny

    Sunny's Bar

    902 Capitol Houston, TX 77002
    713-224-3200

http://www.sunnysbar.com Sunny's is a slice of Kemah-style island boozing amongst the skyscrapers and big business of Downtown Houston. Owned by a couple whose sole aim was to open a friendly bar free of its surroundings' posh attitudes, this bar is definitely worth looking for street parking in its ticket-happy area. Sunny's is extremely bright on the inside, with a pronounced beach vibe and cute signs and stickers throughout. This is the kind of bar where the drinkers become family over a few visits and look out for one another. The night we came in, there was a casserole in the crock pot near the pool tables. A big draw here are the potent Jell-O shots and alcohol-soaked pineapple wedges, which aren't for lightweights. It's rare to spend just a few minutes at Sunny's, and not unusual to see a crowd staggering out at closing time on a weeknight. Read more about Sunny's Bar >>

  • The Charity Saloon

    The Charity Saloon

http://www.friedokra.org/charity-bar.html After almost a year in the making, OKRA Charity Saloon made it's debut in earnest late last year. 100% of the bar’s proceeds go to a local and deserving charity, turning your sinful evenings with the fire water into something great for others. • Warren

    Warren's Inn

    307 Travis Houston, TX 77002
    713-247-9207

Warren's décor is a slacker posh - chandeliers, oversized mirrors, a catbird-seat gazebo - and the atmosphere is as casual as it gets, with a lively crew of regulars usually gathered around the bar to catch up on downtown gossip. Popular with lawyers and judges from the nearby courthouse, Houston Chronicle and Houston Press journalists unwinding from a long day at the keyboard (guilty) and couples gearing up for or relaxing after a night in the Theater District, Warren's has been honored for everything from its potent martinis (careful) to a jazz-heavy jukebox that suits its surroundings to a T.
