Situated deep in Houston's East End, the D&W Lounge is a true dive bar safely tucked away from any sort of hustle or bustle. It relies on nothing but familiarity and salt-of-the-Earth charisma to get by, and does so in extraordinary fashion. The building has been around since the '40s, with little more having been changed than the light bulbs. One of the things that helps this particular space rise above the hangout flotsam though is its crowd. We love the lava lamps, deer heads, and random pictures dotting the tables and walls. It's hard to not steal something on the way out. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.littlewoodrows.com The Little Woodrow's empire expanded into East Downtown with this location at St. Emanuel and Walker, directly across from Warehouse Live. In fact, the bar's huge windows facing the popular music venue make Woodrow's ideal for air-conditioned people-watching as fans make their way into a show, and as a pre- or post-concert hangout. Like the other three Houston-area locations, the emphasis here is on beer and wine, but this one has cocktails and hard liquor as well. The large patio off to the side has plenty of padded booths and an outdoor bar for when the deck starts hopping on weekends. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.luckyspub.com Next door to Warehouse Live, Lucky's Pub is one of the area's best places to grab pre- or post-concert food and drink. With a few pool tables spread around, skee-ball lanes, a few bar games and wall-size projection screen, Lucky's has plenty of distractions for busybody drinkers. For a party, Lucky's has a half-dozen spots to hold court with a small crowd, including an upstairs nook and mammoth back patio. It's not uncommon to catch bands and their road crews hanging out before and after their Warehouse gigs, either. The kitchen stays hopping till the wee hours, dishing out hot wings and crunchy fish tacos to go along with their lengthy list of beers, including some of the best local and specialty craft brews. http://www.midtownloungehouston.com On the far eastern edge of Midtown, almost out of sight on the second story of an inconspicuous strip center, sits the soulful Midtown Lounge. It's a groovy, dimly lit bar, perfect for a calm weeknight or a raucous weekend. Those needing to rest their feet can take a load off on one of the many plump leather chairs and couches, but the dance floor is where folks really want to be. The dark, romantic atmosphere encourages couples of all ages to grab a drink at the horseshoe-shaped bar and head out to strut their stuff. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
https://www.facebook.com/bigweeniestyles Moon Tower Inn isn't a restaurant as much as it is a beacon in the night: Come here and we will comfort you with sausages and beer. Out here in the wilds of the Second Ward, Moon Tower's young owners have carved out a space for people just like them, people who crave good food, good beer, a place to park their bicycles and absolutely no intruding sense of normalcy. Relax with a beer on the knobbly open-air patio while you dither between buffalo or rabbit dogs. Whatever you do, leave your attitude and expectations at the door and you'll be a happy camper. http://www.facebook.com/palmersicehouse Approaching Wayside Drive from I-10 on Houston's east side, Palmer's Ice House beckons with an enticing neon glow and draws a sizable, predominantly Hispanic crowd. It probably doesn't hurt that the brews are fairly inexpensive, or that the big patio offers an escape from the bustling crowds when needed. Live bands mean Palmer's small dance floor is often lively on the weekend. A bona fide taco truck is parked next to the patio when your stomach decides it needs some late-night grub. For an icehouse, this Denver Harbor spot is everything it's supposed to be: Heavy on the charm, if not the beer and booze selection. At Ray Ray's neighbors congregate, down a beer or three, and settle in to watch a game on one of the big televisions while others play pool, darts, or marathon bouts of dominoes. The staff takes time to learn customers' names, and leaves a sign at their barstool when they head out to smoke a cigarette. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
