http://www.fourpoints.com/houstonsouthwest 2828 Lounge is the hotel bar of the Sheraton Four Points near Greenway Plaza, so most of its customers are either passing through Houston or meeting someone who is. Lacking the distractions of club lights and loud music, the bar is well-lit with plenty of cozy seating, a few televisions and a pair of computers, and a full slate of libations. 2828 might not be a traditional hotel lounge, but it makes a good hideaway for those wanting a spot a bit off the map. http://www.88keyshouston.com The term "piano bar" often signifies a saloon-like singalong atmosphere filled with pop, country and rock tunes. Not at 88 Keys, however. Big, antique furniture fills the spacious rooms, drinks come across a gorgeous marble bar top, and the ivory-ticklers at this upscale River Oaks lounge are professional pianists of the highest scale. True, we walked in to a smooth version of "Dust In the Wind," but then came Chopin and Lizst, and all of a sudden it felt like the hotel bar of the Ritz-Carlton. http://www.agorahouston.com Westheimer's vital wine-and-coffee hotspot teems with life every night of the week. The Greek-themed Montrose study-like drinkery is perfect for a night studying with fellow collegiate types, or just a quiet first-date night, to suss out whether or not your current crush is worth keeping around. Plenty of wine varieties are available for the discriminating palette, and be sure to check out the jukebox. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.thearmadillopalace.com Easily spotted thanks to the giant silver armadillo leering at the passing traffic on Kirby Drive, Armadillo Palace is part of the Goode Company cluster of eat-and-drinkerys just south of Highway 59. Patrons can feast on the family's legendary barbecue and sip whiskey while taking in the various frontier décor lining the interior. Live music of the honky-tonk and Red Dirt variety sounds forth from the corner stage Wednesday through Saturday, and there's even a bit of room for dancing. (A bit.) Folks needing a little liquid courage before they take a spin need look no further than the large bar anchoring the center of the room. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.facebook.com/thecellarbar If you find yourself visiting the dimly-lit and dirty-looking Cellar Bar before midnight, you'll most likely find it empty inside. The outside patio however, is the hot spot for patrons, mostly all smokers. The bar offers pool tables, a Wii, dart boards, and karaoke on Fridays. The bartenders are always laid-back, and good music is usually playing from the jukebox. Did we mention that the pitchers of Lone Star are only $6? That's good enough reason to check the place out. Between midnight and 2 a.m., the place will get pretty packed, but those pitchers will keep even the most exhausted customers coming around. Cellar Bar may feel a bit dirty, but it's got character. http://www.firkinandphoenix.com "What the hell is a firkin?" you've probably asked every time you've passed by this Old English-style pub. A firkin is a unit of measurement in true Old English fashion, equal to ¼ of a barrel, or approximately 72 pints. A phoenix is what you feel like when, against all odds, you rise again the morning after you consume a firkin. Firkin & Phoenix features traditional pub fare like cottage pie, bangers, beans and mash, and of course, fish 'n' chips. They've also got more American bar food like burgers and chili dogs, and you can even get some pasta, salads, or finer foods like chicken curry and grilled ribeye steak. They run specials every day, and have karaoke on Thursdays and a free poker tournament on Sundays. Free WiFi, too. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
https://www.twitter.com/GuavaLamp Anchoring a Montrose shopping center near Allen Parkway and Stages Repertory Theater, Guava Lamp is a swanky refuge from the workday and lively den of activity on the weekends. Touted as Houston's premiere video lounge, the bar invites customers to cozy up to the ample couch or booth seating as the screens flicker videos from Madonna, Whitney Houston and numerous other beloved divas. The glowing bar packed with top-shelf liquor offers daily specials, including $4 Jager Blasters on Sundays, explaining the wall of empty green bottles the bar sports like a badge. Guava Lamp hosts periodic live music and is known for its packed Karaoke Wednesdays. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.hendrickspub.com Yes, Hendricks Pub off Kirby is located inside what was a funeral home until a few years ago, but the only thing stiff about this spot is the drinks. (We kinda dig the funeral-home thing, seeing how we spent years drinking at the much scarier Numbers in our youth.) Once again it seems like bars are popping up left and right around Kirby, as the masses turn away from the hassles of Midtown and Washington Avenue. Hendricks is one of the more hospitable haunts we have found, which means they won't let you in if you aren't dressed like a junior executive. Hendricks has a great craft beer menu, decent bites (try the ribs), and has invented a few signature mixed drinks like the Irish Lemonade, which is formulated in such a way that you can barely taste all the Jameson whiskey you are putting away. http://www.mcelroyspub.com Adjacent to The Davenport in Shepherd Plaza, Irish-owned McElroy's offers a plethora of Hibernian beers, ciders and whiskeys. There are enough plush red leather couches and beer-related paraphernalia (mostly Guinness and Harp, of course) on the walls that enjoying a pint or two here actually does feel like being in Dublin. Sprinkled with holiday-party lights, the back porch has a grill that fires up for the weekly steak nights on Wednesdays; customers are welcome to bring their own meat and/or veggies the rest of the time. http://www.mezzaninelounge.com The Mezzanine Lounge boasts a diverse clientele, and the beautiful servers are oftentimes randomly in their underwear. Don't worry, it's legal. Forget workman's compensation; this is customer compensation, thank you very much. The bar also offers karaoke along with a party atmosphere upstairs and a calmer, more laid-back feel downstairs. Be forewarned: If you choose to venture upstairs, you will have beer spilled on you and deal with a lot of rowdy drunks. Everyone's into that kind of thing from time to time, but if you're just looking to knock a few back before you drive home, stay downstairs. It's quieter. Recently the bar was also named the "Smartest Bar in America" for its high bar trivia scores. Maybe we can get the Mezz's drinkers looking into a cure for cancer… Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.mugsyshouston.com Mugsy's narrow but beautiful interior makes it feel ages old, the kind of cozy that can't be replicated by chance design. It also comes from a staff that takes the time to know your name and foster a feeling of camaraderie among the regulars. Mugsy's front and back patios offer an outdoor refuge perfect for posting up with a brew and enjoying the fair weather. Just past the inside bar, a room with several booths and a few large televisions has apparently found great favor with local sports fanatics. There are no quiet weekends, needless to say. http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Owl Owl Bar is beloved by a wide range of patrons, from loyal River Oaks bar-hoppers to tattooed indie types. With a weekday happy hour featuring half-off beer, liquor and house wine, this spot delivers a calm, soothing place to drink during off-peak hours. Entering the small pub will bring you face-to-face with the appropriately owl-themed décor, a smattering of more than 20 vodkas and a staff that treats its clientele like family. If that's still not enough, there's a popcorn machine, and a corner jukebox is stacked with great albums from the past 30 years and set up for free play. Its prime location off Kirby has increased its popularity as that area has become a new hot spot for well-heeled drinkers. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Roak/185214124837126 Roak on Kirby is place to be every weekend, as the party people have made Upper Kirby the new designated pretty people stomping grounds in Houston. Built inside what used to be a funeral home and featuring a swimming pool and a massive main room bathed in blue light, Roak is routinely packed to the gills with sports stars and girls who look like they should be dating said sports stars. All in all, it's a beautiful bar, and there is no scary death-vibe here, at least not when we were posted up there. Yes, the swimming pool does get used, and we can only imagine the shenanigans that will go down once summer comes back to Houston. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.roederspub.com For those who think wood is good, Roeder's Pub salutes you. The floors? Bare wood. The bar? Wood. The tables and chairs? Wood and wood. Even the shutters are wood. In the desert of sizzling concrete that is the corner of Shepherd and Alabama, Roeder's offers a sylvan refuge, a dark and cool spot to chill with a single malt or pint of black beer. There's also a small parking lot patio, real darts, Golden Tee and a Britpop/alt-country juke for those who like their liquid retreats loud and/or active. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
This easy to miss, but not to be missed, dive is located right on Richmond Avenue snuggled behind a small parking lot. The icehouse's central attraction is probably either the "Bad Ass" jukebox or solitary pool table, but the giant TV in the corner usually tuned to ESPN is no shrinking violet. A grill on the back patio is available for cookouts; bring your own meat, though. Ruthie's is cash-only, but does have its own ATM for your convenience. This place gets a bad rep as being some sort of hipster-ridden dive, but we all know that good times don't care how expensive your bicycle was. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
