The Ginger Man Pub

The Ginger Man Pub

Boasting what the bar claims is "America's largest selection of import draughts," the Ginger Man surely has a brew to suit you amongst the 68 on draft and additional 140-150 bottled suds.
Under The Volcano

Under The Volcano

Don't miss the "steak night" special on Monday nights, when a 16-ounce USDA Choice ribeye with tossed salad and mashed potatoes is a bargain.
Dan Electro's Guitar Bar

Dan Electro's Guitar Bar

A smattering of old guitars and groovy fluorescent skating-rink stars decorate the walls, and Dan Electro's corner stage has played host to too many local and regional names to count (most often blues, folk, roots-rock and hard rock).

  • 300 Houston

    300 Houston

925 Bunker Hill Road Houston, TX 77024-1301

  • 510 Bar

    510 Bar

7410 Fairbanks N. Houston Road Houston, TX 77040

This bar's sign, complete with the classic image of a pool player about to break, beckons from a lonely stretch of Fairbanks-North Houston Road. Despite its forlorn location, the hazy 510 is full of chatty regulars, most of whom will introduce themselves in short order. The corner stage hosts a rolling karaoke night, shuffleboard is free, and friendly challenges for the video bowling machine are commonplace. Brews are cheap and cold, and a pair of pool tables awaits those drawn in by that sign. Bustling even on a Tuesday night, 510 Bar feels a bit like a small town, because it almost is a small town. • Agave Bar

16231 Clay Rd Houston, TX 77084

  • Aubrey's Club

7740 W. Gulf Bank Road Houston, TX 77088

  • Blue Lagoon

    Blue Lagoon

1248 Witte Road Houston, TX 77055

The first thing that stands out about Blue Lagoon is the sign above the bar that reads, "No pissy attitudes." The bar takes this seriously, but prides itself on a friendly atmosphere where the bartenders (especially Jack) will learn your name - and use it - before you leave for the first time. It's been under the same ownership for three decades, and the waitstaff isn't afraid to turn away customers who've had one too many. The back wall is covered with pictures of regulars carousing around the bar and the ceiling-fan-cooled back patio. Busy during the early evenings, Blue Lagoon gets quieter the later it's open, matching the low-key but wide-ranging selection of music on the juke box. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • Brick House Tavern + Tap

    Brick House Tavern + Tap

12910 NW Freeway Houston, TX 77040
713-462-0576 Brick House's big screen TVs are strategically placed so that one is always within view. Comfortable leather sofas are available in the lounge. Waitresses and bartenders are dressed in short denim shorts and tight black tops. The food ranges from typical bar food to more somewhat healthier fare such as Caesar salads, herb roasted chicken, and grilled mahi mahi. With the dessert menu entitled "The Happy Ending," Brick House is geared more toward the bachelor than the family man. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • Burlap Barrel Pub

    Burlap Barrel Pub

909 Town and Country Blvd. Houston, TX 77024

The Burlap Barrel Pub may have been a lively place before the ambitious, open-air shopping and residence hub of CityCentre came along, but now it seems to be packed every night. Valet attendants pop up to talk about their day, regulars watch sports and listen to live music, while others make use of the ping-pong and pool tables. Pints are only $3, and a diverse, laid-back crowd makes Burlap Barrel equally well-suited for making friends or meeting up with your own. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • Cedar Lounge

    Cedar Lounge

    7237 Airline Houston, TX 77076

The inconspicuous, windowless, orange-roofed Cedar Lounge has been an Airline Drive mainstay for nearly 50 years. Former home to legendary white blues musician Joey Long, who passed in 1995, the stage rests deep within the lounge's dark interior. In front is a dance floor, which occupies a healthy piece of the medium-sized bar's real estate, and the trio of pool tables in the back are frequented by regulars taking drags on cigarettes and often running the table. The beers are cold and cheap, the service is old-fashioned, and anyone spending any length of time here is bound to come away with a story or two. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • Chula's Sports Cantina

10516 Katy Fwy Houston, TX 77043
713-465-6544 Um, have you seen this place? It's super soccer-centric and full of cute girls in very tiny apparel. There's really not a time when it's empty. Boatloads of dudes are always hanging out by the massive bar, downing cervezas by the dozen. But ladies, don't let the idea of soccer and pretty waitresses turn you off, though. It's totally chick-friendly, and loads of day-drinking fun. We know for a fact -- we've been there too many times to count. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • Drink Houston

    Drink Houston

7620 Katy Freeway Houston, TX 77024
713-471-1896 Yes, Drink Houston hosts a motley crew of attendees, and yes, it enforces a severe dress code and cover charge, but it attracts a diverse crowd of people -- not hard to imagine, with five separate nightclubs under the same roof -- almost every night for one reason: Drink Houston is a fun place to be, with both great hip-hop music and drink specials. • Faces

    1453 Witte Houston, TX 77080

  • The Fountainhead

    The Fountainhead

17021 Ella Blvd. Houston, TX 77090

A smoky tavern hidden at the dark end of an FM 1960 strip center, The Fountainhead almost defies description. Here, the bartender will not only ask your name, but introduce himself and - get this - sing the Cheers theme "Where Everybody Knows Your Name" on karaoke night, microphone in one hand while pouring drinks with the other. To a stranger, The Fountainhead might look nondescript, but for regulars it's a place where "family" gets together to drink, good-natured jabs are traded, and the pours are nice and stiff. And strangers here don't stay strangers for long. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • Lynn

    Lynn's Longbranch Saloon

    5505 Pinemont Houston, TX 77092

Located comfortably next to the Little Bitty Burger Barn, Lynn's Long Branch Saloon has a Southern feel abetted by the country-gold jukebox. Mondays the bar serves free hot dogs to go along with football and $2.50 domestics/$2.75 premiums. Tuesday is Karaoke night, Thursday is the jam session the bar calls its open-mike night, and live bands perform Fridays and Saturdays. Walk out onto the back patio for a final dose of Lynn's old-timey, rustic feel - namely, a fully functional outhouse and a Lone Star Beer plaque fastened to a barn. • The Marque

800 Town & Country Blvd. Houston, TX 77024

  • Monnalisa Bar

    Monnalisa Bar

    800 W. Sam Houston Parkway N. Houston, TX 77024
713-973-1600 Within the still-burgeoning CityCentre - not in central Houston at all, but where I-10 meets Beltway 8 on the far west side - Monnalisa is Hotel Sorella's in-house bar. As such, patrons should expect hotel-bar prices, but Monnalisa compensates with a rich atmosphere and modern feel. Besides an open-flame fire pit anchoring the room, amenities include a gorgeous above-bar chandelier, secluded booths along the back wall and a long, curvy couch on a small landing near the bar. Patrons can also slip out the door to lounge by the blue-lit pool on the second-floor deck. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • Neon Boots Dance Hall and Saloon

11410 Hempstead Highway Houston, TX 77092

  • Nick's Drive In

55 Berry Rd Houston, TX 77022

Nick's attracts an older crowd, and opens early in the morning for the third-shifters. On the night we visited, the bar was packed with mechanics and HVAC workers still in their work shirts, happily sipping on a cold one as they listened and sang to Vicente Fernandez playing on the jukebox. • NJ

3815 Mangum Road Houston, TX 77092

The patron saint of NJ's is Miss Norma Jeane Baker, the pinup model who became film icon Marilyn Monroe. Her glorious image is plastered all over the front room of this Oak Forest neighborhood haunt just off the Northwest Freeway. From the street, NJ's looks a lot smaller than it is once you get inside, with a pool hall and gaming room in the back adding more drinking space. The covered smoking area out front feels more like a cozy garage than the forbidding zones where most bars throw their smokers. A DJ spins '80s nostalgia jams most nights, and you can always expect a strong pour at a decent price. NJ's backs up onto a subdivision, so you won't see many uptown peacocks strutting their stuff, but you may make a few new friends from around the way. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

  • Olde City Pub & Grill

14124 Steubner Airline Houston, TX 77088
832-249-6167 Olde City Pub may not be known for being terribly authentic, but it is known for being supremely welcoming to all comers -- even smokers, as it's outside the Houston city limits -- and for offering a dozen different nooks and crannies to cozy yourself into while you tuck into a plate of fish and chips from the huge menu.
