http://www.alsbar.com The newly renovated Al's Sports Bar, on the edge of George Bush Park near Highway 6, is a lively, rowdy suburban watering hole. Besides lots of TV screens and tank-top-clad waitresses, the football goalpost by the bar leaves no doubt about Al's sporting nature - shouts and sighs carry through the establishment right up to the final play. Besides any game you could possibly want to watch, Al's features live music on the weekends, Texas Hold 'Em tournaments Tuesdays and Thursdays, and a weekly lingerie show on Wednesdays. http://www.bigjohnsbar.com Big John's has a new general manager and is undergoing a somewhat drastic facelift. Despite its gigantic size, it's a cozy bar where the live music isn't cranked way, way up, so patrons can actually converse with each other. The impressive pool hall in the back room - John's is affiliated with the American Pool Association - is likewise being renovated, with a dance floor on the way. Wednesday is trivia night, and DJs spin on Friday and Saturday. Big John's offers more than 25 beers on tap, $2 wells and $1.75 drafts; food specials include ribeye and salmon nights on Tuesday and Thursday (respectively), and fajita tacos are available upon request. http://www.thecoloradobarandgrill.com Do you like a good Philly cheesesteak or pollo poblano with your boobs? What we're saying here is that, besides the lovely ladies gracing the club's three main stages, there's a bountiful menu. And if for some reason you need a break from looking at half-naked gyrating young females, the Colorado offers billiards, tabletop video games and Golden Tee. From its old-school-Vegas-style sign to its super-friendly staff, the Colorado has a look and feel quite unlike that at other places where ladies twirl on poles in clear high heels for strangers. Some gentlemen's clubs tend to go overboard on creating an illusion of exclusivity; the Colorado is laid-back and lacks pretense. Who knows? You might even become a regular. Stepping into this dark, friendly cavern of a tatterdemalion strip mall bar near the ruins of Westbury Square is like entering a portal back to 1980, with a difference. Yes, it's got the requisite low ceiling, cheap drinks, early opening time (11 a.m.) and friendly, take-no-shit service you expect from any old-school dive worth its salty peanuts. And yep, there's not much on the jukebox to thrill the ears of trendy Vampire Weekend and Animal Collective fans. We're talking stuff like Wet Willie, Hank Sr. and .38 Special. But this isn't your average suburban strip mall dive by a long shot, as any trip to the Cozy's Friday and Saturday night karaoke extravaganzas will prove. Let's just say Westbury more than lives up to its "Little Montrose" nickname during Cozy Corner karaoke night. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
Anchoring a Richmond strip center between Fondren and Gessner, El Rey's blinking neon-green sign beckons drinkers Tuesday through Saturday. This sports bar feels a bit more spacious than most others, likely due to the large dance floor and raised stage. The booze selection is limited to beer and wine, but there are plenty of wells full of ice-cold brews behind the large bar top. Three pool tables sit in the back corner of the big U-shaped room, but the real entertainment is the music - El Rey features a bevy of Latin sounds from salsa and cumbia to one of Houston's myriad rock en español bands. Monday Night Football and UFC fights are big draws at this Westside establishment with a friendly, attentive staff and plenty of TVs on the walls. Live music on the weekends and karaoke on Tuesdays and Thursdays make the End Zone a popular party spot as well. In addition, the Monday and Wednesday poker nights offer cash prizes, and the kitchen serves up everything from shrimp po-boys to pizza to wings. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.hideawayondunvale.com Steve Selfridge has created what might be Houston's most underrated - and therefore perfect - dive bar way out west on Dunvale at Richmond. You can smoke cigars on the sprawling patio. You can order ten-pound buckets of crawfish in season. You can eat a whole lobster or a steak-and-baked-potato on the cheap during certain nightly specials. And you can usually see some excellent blues and and classic rock cover bands while you're chowing down. Better yet - even if you don't bring a friend, you'll likely have made a few by the time you leave. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>

http://www.mixkaraoke.com The words "karaoke bar" and "upscale" seldom appear in the same sentence, but Mix Karaoke is an exception. This sleek nightclub on the far west side has plenty of couches, but people are rarely sitting. Thursday is college night, so as long as you're over 18 you're more than welcome to come in - which is probably explains the bar's young, energetic, fun-loving crowd. Mix's dress code is strictly enforced, but it's not especially strict: No flip-flops, tank tops or cutoffs for guys; same for the ladies except for the tank tops. The menu has typical bar food such as pizza and cheese sticks, as well as sushi and edamame. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
They don't make 'em like Mr. Gino's anymore. With Christmas lights on the walls, plywood partitioning and a small stage in the corner, Gino's feels more like a juke joint in rural Mississippi or East Texas than a bar in the fourth-largest city in America. (Its lack of a Web site should give you a small hint about its authenticity.) Gino's is a neighborhood bar all the time, but its real draw is the Sunday-night open jams — full of blues, R&B and soul that sticks to your ribs — that have been welcoming loyal regulars and curious onlookers alike since it opened. Provided you can find the place — look for the used-furniture store next door with the handwritten signs in the windows — it's probably the best $5 you'll spend all week. http://www.nicksplacehouston.com “We’ve always got your game on!” states Nick’s Italian Sports Bar and Pizzeria. With 40 TVs positioned throughout the place, that’s an understatement. You can watch any type of sport at any time at the bar, and to top it off, the 20-year-old institution also serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. But watch your step: The bar’s intimate dance floor gets crowded with cheering fans quickly, so you might be safer taking shots at one of the long wooden tables the venue boasts. http://www.taylorsofhouston.com Taylor's of Houston's is on the city's southwest side, past South Main on South Post Oak. This spacious dance hall's sizeable dance floor is often full of people shaking away the night. Three bars throughout the building dole out the goods all night; the back patio has a fourth, along with some pool tables. If the event hall isn't large enough, there's an additional VIP lounge complete with another dance floor and a "support pole." The entire place can be reserved for private parties, a not-uncommon occurrence. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
http://www.clubtropicanahouston.com Nestled in the elbow of one of Houston’s countless strip centers, Club Tropicana may not appear to be much from the exterior. The sign's blue and red glow can be easy to miss from the street, but for those seeking a dance club with Latin flair, Tropicana is a bright destination. Once inside, patrons will find a large dance floor, abundant seating, and an impressive bar in a room rich with red and mahogany decorations. Dancers twirl about three nights a week, sweeping in for the Tuesday salsa lessons and rolling to the DJs who spin hot rumba, bachata, and merengue tracks. Tropicana is only open Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, though, so plan accordingly. Read more about this Houston bar or club >>
