A downtown mainstay for almost 15 years, Echo is split in two by a bar that nearly takes up the entire room. This creates a lounge area complete with couches and a few small tables to the right of the entrance, with a large square hole in the bar wall that allows patrons to order without crossing to the other side of the room. Next door to Groundhall and formerly known as Jet Lounge, Echo hosts live acts at least five nights a week on its corner stage. It's a dark place, but the bar wall's changing colored lights aid visibility, while the metal hearts suspended from the ceiling draw eyes toward the stage. Echo's only drawback seems to be the parking situation, especially on nights when something is transpiring at Toyota Center a couple of blocks north. More >>
http://www.einsteinspub.com Einstein's is a favorite refuge for many Katy-area folks, who can be found drinking long into the night seven days a week inside this dark pub or out on its deck. Televisions dot the spacious main room, and pool tables, dartboards, and video games provide some competitive diversions. Houston's smoking ban doesn't stretch this far, but a system of fans and filters keeps the rooms from getting too hazy. Live music fills the weekends, while amateurs are welcome to try their luck at the Wednesday karaoke nights. Drink specials run from inexpensive wells to pint nights, and not just the light-beer standards, either. The wall of taps behind the bar has an impressive selection, so don't be surprised to see some premiums offered up dirt-cheap. More >>
http://www.rodeodisco.com Passing by this spot on the Gulf Freeway feeder during daylight hours, one might think little of the El Rodeo sign unassumingly hanging in the corner of a big-box strip center. Come Friday and Saturday nights, though, El Rodeo's doors are the portal into a swirling sea of NorteƱo culture. (Saturdays the masses are moved via DJ, but Friday nights are all band-driven.) Not only does the massive dancehall reach its 1,600-person capacity, but also multiple adjacent parking lots are brimming with cars and trucks. While the crowd reaches critical proportions, El Rodeo's six giant bars will sate your thirst no matter how many belt buckles you are competing against. What's more, a taco truck posted outside makes a perfect late-night noshing solution when last call comes around. More >>
Okay, it's billed as a restaurant and cantina, but nobody ever, ever eats here. This downtown Houston hot spot is just for dancing. Flamenco shows and salsa lessons warm up the early crowd, and live cumbia and merengue bands take over after 10 p.m. Novices beware: The competition on the dance floor can be cutthroat. More >>
