  • R & R Sports Bar & Grill

    R & R Sports Bar & Grill

1840 Barker Cypress Houston, TX 77084
281-578-2704 R&R Sports Bar & Grill takes the dark and smoky approach to its decor, with long bar tables and a small stage made for off-key karaoke. Push the chairs aside and you can show that you were made for dancing all night long to the pub’s featured live bands. Or you can get onstage and start your own: This month, R&T hosts Big Slick and Inside Out. In addition to the live and homemade entertainment, R&R has daily drink specials, with $2 margaritas or $3 pint beers. From Thirsty Thursdays to Ladies Night, there’s always something going on here. • The Red Barn Saloon & Dancehall

The Red Barn Saloon & Dancehall

    5406 Hwy 36 S. Rosenberg, TX 77471

This Rosenberg country dance hall, bar and live-music venue makes visitors feel as though they really are way out in the country; across the street is a large tract of farmland. Being outside Houston, smoking is allowed in the main saloon hall upon entrance; patrons can enter the neon-lighted dance hall for a smoke-free environment. The bar looks like a saloon you would see in an old Western movie, with the addition of a dozen TVs, three pool tables, video games, dartboards and an Internet jukebox. Thursday night a DJ hosts karaoke, while on Friday and Saturday nights bands play live music, usually country with some occasional rock and R&B; Red Barn is closed on Sundays. More >>

  • Red Cat Jazz Cafe

    Red Cat Jazz Cafe

711 Franklin St. Houston, TX 77002
713-226-7870 Even if you don't know Miles Davis from Buddy Miles or John Coltrane from John Legend (or jazz fusion from fusion cooking, for that matter), there's something about being in a jazz club that automatically makes you feel more, well, sophisticated. Downtown's Red Cat Jazz Café, though, offers uptown sophistication with a down-home Southern twist and spacious brick-wall acoustics that ensure you never miss a (blue) note. Several of the Red Cat's resident artists — elder-statesman vocalist Ardis Turner and New Orleans native/Patti LaBelle duet partner Mary Griffin — play jazz that, like Houston itself, has been heavily infiltrated by blues, R&B and soul. And don't forget to eat — the Red Cat's Louisiana-flavored menu (pricey, but worth it) and full bar will fill your belly as satisfyingly as the music fills your ears. More >>

  • Redneck Country Club

    11110 W Airport Blvd. Stafford, TX 77477
281-809-4867 Inflaming listeners' political passions is how Michael Berry makes his living, but his own passion is music. More specifically, the highly rated KTRH-AM talk-radio host digs roots stuff, often talking up Texas country, Southern rock and gonzo Americana artists on the air or welcoming them as guests. Since last fall, Berry has also been proprietor of the Redneck Country Club, a suburban lodge with plenty of parking that specializes in both kinds of music: country and western. No doubt one of the few private-club honky-tonks in existence, the RCC bestows plenty of privileges on its members — non-members usually shell out twice what members pay, for example — all the way up to the "Big Ass Gun" $50,000 lifetime membership that includes, among many other things, $10,000 in-house credit to be spent at your discretion and your name/company logo on the menus. If that seems like a lot to pay for some steel guitar, we hear the burgers are mighty tasty, too. More >>

    Re:HAB Bar on the Bayou

    1658 Enid Houston, TX 77009
713-225-1668 This friendly bar located on the banks of Little White Oak Bayou, a few minutes drive from Downtown or the Heights, features a large backyard with picnic tables, a big court for playing washers and a fire pit. A current project at Re:HAB is an old VW Beetle outside that is being transformed into a barbecue pit; inside there are several interesting works from a local artist. Live music is performed here weekly and there is never a cover; the bands appreciate tips. The Mitch Jacobs Band, Texas Johnny Boy and blues legend Milton Hopkins – who played with B.B. King and other greats – play here on a regular basis. Friendly owner Grace Miller from Glasgow, Scotland has lived in Houston for 20 years and calls Houston the “best city in America”; Re:HAB's equally friendly patrons will make you a believer if you are not one already. • The Remington

1919 Briar Oaks Lane Houston, TX 77027

The St. Regis Hotel describes the atmosphere at The Remington as "casual elegance," which is on point. The food takes a Texan slant on American fusion cuisine. Though it's fairly casual cuisine for the price, much attention is paid to plating and appearance. The interior carries on the Texas theme with a red, white and blue (although mostly red) seating area. Quick-service executive lunches are available for hungry workers to go. More >>

  • Ringside At Sullivan

    Ringside At Sullivan's

    4608 Westheimer Houston, TX 77027
713-961-0333 The name of the bar at Sullivan's Steakhouse is a totally appropriate moniker, really, given the amount of cougars prowling this circus. We've literally never been in this bar without spotting at least one table of cougars on the prowl, and the bar stays open quite late, so we can imagine it only gets better as the night goes on. Lots of good wine and an interesting crowd keep these ladies coming back night after night, we'd guess. More >>
