  • Under The Volcano

    Under The Volcano

    2349 Bissonnet Houston, TX 77005
    713-526-5282

http://www.facebook.com/underthevolcanohouston Under The Volcano, a cozy, eccentric bar in Rice Village, takes its name from a macabre 1947 novel by Malcolm Lowry. It's a great club for most every occasion, be it a birthday, a first date, or the beginning of the longest night of your life. Don't miss the "steak night" special on Monday nights, when a 16-ounce USDA Choice rib-eye with tossed salad and mashed potatoes is a bargain, plus you may be able to spy a few Houston Texans players chowing down. • Vic & Anthony

    Vic & Anthony's Steakhouse

1510 Texas St. Houston, TX 77002
    713-228-1111

http://www.vicandanthonys.com Although owned by corporate giant Landry's, you'd be hard-pressed to tell inside this popular downtown steakhouse, where the ever-changing menu is headed up by Chef Carlos Rodriguez and his talented kitchen team. Vic & Anthony's is sumptuous and refined while still offering some surprises on its traditional, meat-and-seafood-heavy menu. The jumbo lump crab cakes are the best in town, without compare. And the house-cured meat platter includes smoky strips of lardo - a rare find - and tangy housemade pickles that make you wish for a jar to take home. Bonus: The sexy bar has a piano player in the evenings if you really want to impress a date. More >>

  • Walter

    Walter's Downtown

    1120 Naylor Houston, TX 77002
    713-222-2679

http://www.waltersdowntown.com Last February, Pam Robinson began the long trek of moving her club off the Washington strip and into downtown. What could have been the final nail in this beloved alternative venue's coffin has turned out to be the beginning of a new chapter. Over time, this would prove to be a smart move, as the clubs off the Washington strip continue to vacate the premises. Walters Houston, now located next to UH-Downtown, is still home to thrashers, metal-heads, scenesters and an array of subgenres. Among other things, the move has given Walters more space for parking, and the showroom is bigger, too. More >>

  • Warehouse Live

    Warehouse Live

813 St. Emanuel Houston, TX 77003
    713-225-5483

http://www.warehouselive.com Warehouse Live has about a million things going for it. Let's start with the obvious: the booze is cheap, and you have at least six places to get your liquid fix. The sound system is awesome, as are the venue's sight lines, in both the main ballroom and the smaller studio setting. Even cooler is the air conditioning. True, rock and roll is meant to draw sweat and stank, but some nights you just want to literally chill out and see a band without buying stock in Right Guard. The venue just added a quiet bar inside the building for when you feel like taking a break in between bands to get away from the throngs in the other rooms. More >>

  • Westwind Club

    Westwind Club

5905 Guhn Rd Houston, TX 77040
    713-462-7204

http://westwindclub.com/index.htm Housed in a traditional Texas country dancehall-style building in Northwest Houston, Westwind is now the oldest running honky-tonk in Houston after Blanco's in River Oaks closed in 2013. Speaking of Blanco's, Westwind is now hosting a lot of artists who played there, including the Cornell Hurd Band, Jesse Dayton, and the Derailers, who are scheduled to play an upcoming Blanco's reunion show with more planned for the future. As their website states, the patrons of Westwind come out to do some “two-steppin' and long-neckin',” and for most customers the long-neckin' consists of drinking Bud Lights, other domestic beers, and the occasional import; there are no fancy craft beers served here, thank you very much. The club is big enough to accommodate the two-steppers out on the dance floor on Saturday nights, but small enough to feel like an intimate neighborhood bar during the afternoon happy hour. Country Legends 97.1 FM broadcasts live here every Saturday night and DJ Ron plays nothing but classic country hits released before 1980 on Sundays starting at 1 p.m. A game room with shuffleboard, pool tables, video games, darts and a Texas Pride Meter is available, and the outdoor patio for smokers is air-conditioned for hot Texas summer days and nights.
