http://www.myspace.com/springbeachbumsbar Inside this Spring watering hole, an 18-foot waterfall, surfboard-lined walls and plenty of beach-related paraphernalia take customers far from the shopping-center surroundings - all the way to Galveston, or so owner Brian Scott hopes. In only two months, the Houston Fire Department captain's bar has begun to take on its own identity, playing host to a multitude of neighborhood youth looking to drink and dance to something besides country music. DJs and musicians enliven Fridays and Saturdays, and nearly a dozen TVs and a gigantic projector have been installed. Twelve beers are available on tap, but Beach Bums offers almost any kind of beverage you can think of, including flavored vodkas and frozen margaritas. More >>
http://www.bferockclub.com For Inner-Loopers, BFE is certainly true to its name. (Those unfamiliar with the acronym should consult Urban Dictionary.) For residents of Houston's northwest fringes, though, BFE is a rock haven. This smoky bar boasts a stage and sound system big enough to melt faces while maintaining the intimate vibe of a smaller music venue. On Wednesdays, budding arena hopefuls take the stage for open-mike night, with stadium drums and delayed vocals prevailing over crowd noise. Pool tables in the back provide entertainment on non-show nights, and a photo wall displays regulars' faces. Don't skip out on the suggestively-named Sexy Kitchen, which serves up an array of grilled and fried delights, including a fried Honey Bun. More >>
http://www.bigtoplounge.com The Big Top is the little brother of the Continental Club next door and the surlier cousin of uber-hipster watering hole The Mink around the corner. This block is one of Houston's most colorful, its restaurants and music venues teeming with life on the weekends. As hinted in its moniker, the Big Top is heavy on circus decor, festooned with dusty, quaint portraits and signs from that bygone yet uniquely American era of hucksters and freak shows. But that is just a small part of the bar's story. Live music happens most nights the Big Top is open, from garage-rock DJs to various Americana and covers acts playing under a big birdcage in the corner of the bar. If you feel like getting some fresh air under the stars, the back door opens onto the Continental's backyard and the outdoor Pachinko Hut bar. More >>
http://www.birrarestaurant.com The downtown location really packs 'em in, with tables so close together you can reach out and touch someone. The service is at its most erratic before the theater. At other times, you may enjoy decent if overpriced Italian food and a remarkably fine thin-crust pizza. It's nice that you can choose whichever kind of pasta you like and top it with your favorite sauce. Pleasant bar area with excellent happy-hour specials. And great chocolate mousse. More >>
http://www.houseofblues.com Right off to the side of the main stage at House of Blues, you'll find the Bronze Peacock Room. It's dead-on perfect for smaller bands who can't quite fill up HOB's bigger hall, and quite ideal for more intimate performances. There's an adequate bar, tables and even its own staffed smoking lounge off to the side (complete with a bartender). More >>
http://www.cactusmusictx.com Frequent in-store performances turn Houston's roots-music retail haven into something akin to nirvana. Not only is there never a cover, but the beer is always free. It bears repeating: There's never a cover, and the beer is always free. Over the years everyone from Townes Van Zandt to the Ramones have taken the stage. It's new renaissance and location has brought the likes of Against Me! frontman Tom Gabel and Justin Townes Earle playing day sets for early crowds, while the weekly guest DJ's in the Record Ranch never disappoint. http://www.thecapitolhouston.com It's evident from the moment that you walk into The Capitol at St. Germain that it's no mere restaurant. Its dual bars, private lounge and main stage replete with red velvet curtains signal a modern supper club, the type that hosts intimate jazz bands during the week and full shows on the weekends. But there's nothing stuffy about this swanky downtown supper club, which offers playful and well-constructed dishes on its full menu, such as a foie gras trio called Menage à Foie and cheap but wickedly strong gin martinis during happy hours. http://www.casagrandehouston.com Located in the north Heights, Casa Grande's very popular nightclub is open on Friday and Saturday nights. There's also free live music in the bar on Thursdays. The thing to order is nachos supreme, an enormous pile of chips covered with beans, fajita meat, and melted cheese, and garnished with guacamole, slices of pickled jalapeño, lettuce, tomato and sour cream. It's not an appetizer, it's a meal. More >>
http://www.chicagoitalianbeef.org Cubs fans (and, of course, anyone else) can unite around a Chicago favorite: Italian beef subs. The Italian beef sub is served "dipped" in gravy and comes with sweet peppers and homemade rough-cut fries. Giardiniera (hot, pickled vegetables) and other toppings are available on the condiments bar. The place also serves a mean meatball sandwich with marinara sauce and a great Italian sausage sandwich. Chicago-style hot dogs and a Polish dog with grilled onions are also not to be missed. More >>
