    Baker Street Pub & Grill

    5510 Morningside Houston, TX 77005
    713-942-9900

http://www.sherlockspubco.com Within the Sherlock's family, every Baker Street Pub is the same, and every Baker Street Pub is different: heavy, rich wooden tables and chairs, comfy leather booths and plenty of nooks beckoning groups of friends to settle in for the night. The menu is loaded with standard pub fare, including some authentic British dishes, and the décor is bound to include a smattering of beer signs, England references and mood lighting. The Rice Village location caters to nearby students as well as folks from the neighborhood, and boasts a kitchen that serves grub right up until 2 a.m. When the weather is amiable, the welcoming front patio makes a fine hangout. • Miller Outdoor Theatre

    Miller Outdoor Theatre

6000 Hermann Park Drive Houston, TX 77030
    281-823-9103

http://www.milleroutdoortheatre.com Nestled at the foot of "Hippie Hill," one of Houston's only elevations - and a man-made one at that - this 1,600-seat proscenium-style amphitheater has fallen on hard times since its bigger, flashier look-alike, the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, opened up in The Woodlands. You can't tell by its appearance, though - the 36-year-old facility has never looked better, and the concessions are lately much improved. Through the spring, summer and fall, the venue hosts an eclectic assortment of free plays, ethnic music events, dance exhibitions and classical concerts. The view of the city from the top of Hippie Hill is hard to beat, and elevation-starved local kids love to gambol on its slopes, making this perhaps the finest family music venue in town. More >>

  • The Big Easy Social and Pleasure Club

The Big Easy Social and Pleasure Club

    5731 Kirby Houston, TX 77005
    713-523-9999

Along with places like Etta's Lounge and The Silver Slipper, The Big Easy keeps Houston's blues and zydeco scene vibrant and fertile, bringing down-to-earth charm and solid soul to one of the city's toniest areas. The focus here is on local artists, living legends who routinely draw capacity crowds. The ghosts of blues past are haunt the club's walls in spirit and in portraits. The club's high volume level and physical intimacy - weekend nights here can redefine the word "packed" - offer patrons the chance to get up close and personal with the artists and each other alike. Plenty of stories are floating around about oldsters cutting the proverbial rug and dancing rings around the younger folks. The front patio offers an almost alarmingly close view of Kirby Drive, one of Houston's main surface-street arteries. More >>

  • Under The Volcano

    Under The Volcano

    2349 Bissonnet Houston, TX 77005
    713-526-5282

http://www.facebook.com/underthevolcanohouston Under The Volcano, a cozy, eccentric bar in Rice Village, takes its name from a macabre 1947 novel by Malcolm Lowry. It's a great club for most every occasion, be it a birthday, a first date, or the beginning of the longest night of your life. Don't miss the "steak night" special on Monday nights, when a 16-ounce USDA Choice rib-eye with tossed salad and mashed potatoes is a bargain, plus you may be able to spy a few Houston Texans players chowing down.
