  • Lawndale Art Center

    Lawndale Art Center

4912 Main St. Houston, TX 77002
    713-528-5858

http://www.lawndaleartcenter.org Lawndale Art Center, located in Midtown near the Museum District, is best know for its annual juried Big Show, when artists submit work for a chance to be seen in the gallery by hordes of hip, wine- and beer-sipping Houstonians. But Lawndale gets up to plenty of other things involving contemporary art produced by regional artists. Four galleries, three studios and an outdoor sculpture garden (which is decidedly more avant garde than the more traditional garden at the MFAH) means there's always something going on, event- or exhibit-wise. Check the website for schedules. More >>

http://www.mktbar.com MKT BAR is located right inside Phoenicia Specialty Foods, one of the best grocery stores in the city. It's also not a bad little date place, with enough dim lighting and extensive wine and beer lists to keep you busy in addition to the bar food. All of the music is local, and ranges from DJ sets, jazz combos, light rock offerings so it's not too intrusive. More >>

    Walter's Downtown

    1120 Naylor Houston, TX 77002
    713-222-2679

http://www.waltersdowntown.com Last February, Pam Robinson began the long trek of moving her club off the Washington strip and into downtown. What could have been the final nail in this beloved alternative venue's coffin has turned out to be the beginning of a new chapter. Over time, this would prove to be a smart move, as the clubs off the Washington strip continue to vacate the premises. Walters Houston, now located next to UH-Downtown, is still home to thrashers, metal-heads, scenesters and an array of subgenres. Among other things, the move has given Walters more space for parking, and the showroom is bigger, too. More >>
