http://www.amshootcenters.com Texans love to blow up stuff, and we take serious pride in doing it. Naturally, then, it's important to us to have the best facilities. And when Houstonians feel the need to start shooting outdoors, there's no better place to do it than American Shooting Centers, located in George Bush Park. This 563-acre adult playground of a gun range is like Pebble Beach for NRA members and other gun lovers. You can buy a brand-new piece in their pro shop, take lessons on how to use it and, when you're done, take courses to get your concealed handgun license. That way, you can carry your gun like a good red-blooded Texan. More >>

Whether you're shooting your old family-heirloom deer rifle or just squeezing off some rounds with your new .380, Bailey's House of Guns will make any gun enthusiast feel at home. Located south just off Almeda Road, Bailey's is a family-run institution. The range shop is filled with massive stuffed beasts and loaded to the gills with any accessory you may ever need, be it ammo, carrying cases or other tactical gear. Saturdays and Sundays bring parents learning the basics of marksmanship, with children and older kids showing off their shiny new lethal toys. Just be sure to listen and be cool with the range instructors, seeing that they have your life in their hands. More >>

http://www.collectorsfirearms.com For Houston fanatics, Collectors Firearms in the Galleria area is to gun geeks as Cactus Music in Montrose is to record geeks, or something like that. New guns, old guns and collectible guns are all here and accounted for, and the store's staff is always on hand to help school you on each piece. Not all the weapons at Collectors are your usual sporting goods fare either; there are some beautiful items here that are almost too pretty to do anything with but mount on a wall and stare at. Eleanor Tinsley Park

150 Sabine St. Houston, TX 77007
    713-247-3500

As Wayne Coyne of renowned Oklahoma rock band The Flaming Lips once noted, Eleanor Tinsley Park operates as a “natural amphitheater.” Even in the blistering heat of summer, few things are cooler than listening to a fabulous band while sprawled out on Tinsley’s large grassy hill, as the downtown Houston skyline acts as a stunning backdrop. Formerly known as Buffalo Bayou Park, Tinsley is swarmed by tens of thousands of Houstonians and out-of-towners each year for the annual Free Press Summer Fest and a variety of other festivals, including the city’s annual Fourth of July fireworks show. During quieter months, joggers and dog walkers still pack the park, though there's plenty of room for everyone. More >>

  • Wildcat Golf Club

    Wildcat Golf Club

12000 Almeda Road Houston, TX 77045
    713-413-3400

http://www.wildcatgolfclub.com The two golf courses at Wildcat are the only ones in the city with real hills. Not only does the terrain provide an interesting test of a golfer's skills, the hilltops also afford spectacular views of nearby Reliant Stadium and the Houston skyline. But it's the reason that Wildcat boasts the highest elevations in Harris County that makes it special: It's built on a former landfill site. Landfills used to be fenced off and forgotten once they were full. There were few ways to reuse the land without disturbing the buried waste. Who knew such a place could be so damn pretty? The stellar view is so distracting, golfers may forget to keep their eye on the ball. More >>
