Comparisons to Pavement notwithstanding, Parquet Courts singer Andrew Savage is less Stephen Malkmus and more Warren Zevon path, or even the Randy Newman path, though the latter wrote that abysmally dumb song that tall people with low self-esteem and/or limited intelligence love to quote by way of a consolation prize for their troubles here on earth, while Savage has not yet mis-stepped so profitably. Which is to say that being a singer-songwriter doesn't have to be boring, nor does it have to add up to total schmaltz. Savage's tour supporting new solo album Thawing Dawn begins in Houston, and even includes a track named "Ladies of Houston" (though we haven't heard it), about which subject more could always be written (or written by, as in songs written by ladies of Houston [about positively whatever catches their fancy---end paranthetics]).
