Scared of skydiving, bungee jumping, free falling, standing at the edge of a cliff or skyscraper and looking down? None of those sensations are present during hang gliding, says Tiki Mashy of Cowboy Up Hang Gliding Texas. “When people say, ‘I don’t want to fall’ or they’re afraid of heights, that generally means they’re afraid of falling,” says Mashy, “which means they can’t skydive and bungee jump because of that out-of-control feeling. Hang gliding isn’t like any of that. It’s the purest form of flying.” The center, out in Wharton, offers tandem flights, including one that takes participants 3,000 feet off the ground for half an hour. Mashy says Texas is hang-gliding country because of its consistent year-round weather compared to other states.
